Ayuhal Mukminun, O Believers, welcome to you. Welcome to you in this most Holy day of Jumma. Welcome to you in the last day of the Holy month of Shaban. Welcome to you as the honoured guest of Ramazan is preparing to meet us this evening, when we will pray the first Tarawih prayer.
The book of the month of Shaban is closing for this Islamic year, the year of 1435. Only Allah swt knows if we will see the month of the Holy Prophet (asws) in our lifetime. And this is the last khutbah of this year that we are reading this dua, ‘Allahuma barighlana fi Rajab wa Shaban wa balighna Ramazan.’ May Allah swt accept whatever weak broken effort we made for His pleasure during Rajab and Shaban, and may we enter into the Holy month of Ramazan in a way that is pleasing to our Lord. Welcome to the Sultan of the Month. Welcome to the Month of Mercy. Welcome to the Month of the Ummat. Marhaba Ya Shahru Ramazan, Marhaba.
O Believers, let us listen to the words that our Holy Prophet (asws) taught his companions in the khutbah of the last day of Shaban. Hazreti Salman al-Farisi (ra) is narrating that in the khutbah, “Holy Prophet (asws) said, ‘O people, a great and a blessed month has arrived for you. A month in which there is a night that is better than one thousand months. The fasting during this month, it is an obligation and the extra prayer during its nights are voluntary. Anyone who comes closer to Allah through a good deed during this month, it is as if he performed an obligation, duty during times other than Ramazan. And he who fulfils an obligation, duty in it, in this month, it will be like one who fulfils seventy obligations in another month. It is the month of patience and the reward of patience, is Paradise. It is the month of visiting the poor, the sick, and the needy, so as to share their sorrows. It is the month where the nourishment, the sustenance and the income of the believing muslims increase and they are blessed.'”
O Believers, Ramazan is coming to us with the chance for us to be forgiven. Ramazan is coming to us with the chance to reach to the Mercy of Allah swt. Ramazan is coming to us with the chance to make up for our shortcoming. We cannot let this month pass us by and for us to be sitting here with one month having made no difference in our lives. Holy Prophet (asws) is saying, ‘when the month of Ramazan comes, the gates of Paradise are open and the gates of Hellfire are closed and the shaytan, they are chained.’ So during Ramazan, we should check ourselves. We should sit down and examine ourselves. We should sit down and judged ourselves. Because any wrong things we are seeing in ourselves, in our intentions, in our actions, we cannot blame shaytan for it. Because it is coming from us. If our arrogance is showing in Ramazan, then that arrogance is inside of us. If we are lying and cheating during Ramazan, it is because it is inside of us. If we are being proud, stubborn, jealous or angry during the month of Ramazan, we cannot blame shaytan that is locked up.
We must blame ourselves, and with that blaming, we have to run to beg the forgiveness of Allah swt. Because Allah swt is forgiving His servants during this month. Holy Prophet (asws) is saying that the first ten days of Ramazan, they are days of Mercy. The second ten days, are days of forgiveness. And the last ten days are days of freedom from the fire. O Believers, we should run in each of these days to catch the blessings, because we cannot afford to miss even one day. And as we begin the month of Ramazan, we should make the effort to enter it in the best way. Someone once asked Hz Abdullah ibn Masud, ‘how do the early muslims used to greet Ramazan?’ and he answered, ‘none of us used to dare to greet the crescent moon of Ramazan with the speck, with the drop of bad feelings, grudges in his heart for his muslims brother.’
So during this month, we should leave our egos behind and during this month, we should leave our fighting behind, we should leave fitnah and division, we should leave stubbornness. In this month, we should enter with forgiving and in this month, we should enter knowing that the blame, if anything, is coming from us. And during this month, we should work to make our hearts to come together again. We should enter the month of Ramazan with the intention to become better servants to our Lord. As our Sheykh, Sahibul Saif Sheykh Abdul Kerim Qibrisi el-Rabbani (qs) is saying, we must make intention to become better individual during the month of Ramazan. The way we talk, the way we act, the way we do things, the way we share, that we are saying the muslim countries they make that tradition, is coming from the time of the Prophet (asws). During that time, people didn’t have to share when they were fasting because they were sharing all the time. But the nations that came after that became individual running after individualism and egoistic ones.
This month must teach us to come back to our own self, to realise what’s happening around us, to realise what’s happening to the nations of Muhammad (asws). To realise what’s happening to mankind. When we become better ones, we’ll be able to reach to others. And our Sheykh is also saying, may Allah make it easier for us and we are making the intention InsyaAllah ar-Rahman to reach and to continue during this month, we must hold tightly to get rid of anger, we must hold tightly during this month to get rid of proudness, we must hold tightly to get rid of jealousy and we must hold tightly to get rid of stubbornness. These are the characteristics of Shaytan and the characteristics of the ego. If a man is fasting and he is still carrying these characteristics, he’s not fasting for Allah. he’s fasting for his ego again. And his ego is fooling him.
O Believers, InsyaAllah ar-Rahman, during this Ramazan we will be from those who gain the mercy and forgiveness, and the pleasure of our Lord. InsyaAllah ar-Rahman, we’ll be from those who become better servants to our Prophet (asws), we’ll become one of those who are sincere murids to our Sheykh. InsyaAllah we’ll reach one step closer to fulfilling the reason of our creation. May Allah swt protect us from being amongst those whose egos are fooling them during the month of Ramazan. Amin. Amin. Amin.
