Question: What is the best way to thoroughly purify oneself and to consciously do so every single day?
You cannot purify yourself consciously every single day. That is ego. Be humble. Step by step. Start small. Don’t sleep too much. Don’t eat too much. People enter and they have such grand ideas. You see, you are not going to get this kind of answer from everyone. That means I don’t want anything from you. You like it, take it. You don’t like it, leave it. You don’t have to listen to this crazy man for nothing. But because you are asking, I’m going to say. You cannot purify yourself consciously every single day. You understand? Have you tried to purify yourself consciously one single day? Not every single day, one day. Could you do it? If you tell me you can, I’m going to say that again is ego.
We never talk about purifying ourselves here also. Tauba Astarghfirulla. You understand? We talk about what? Stepping on our ego. Completely different. One is to make ourselves to become pure and Holy. Astarghfirullah. And the other is saying, we should just not let other beast that is inside of us to overtake us. To make us to become aware. You understand?
We are not trying to become Holy. We are not trying to achieve enlightenment, illumination and all this kind of… No! We are here just not to let that evil that is inside of us to take over in small and big things. We are here trying to follow the teachings of our Sheykh in every facet of our lives, as much as we can. After a while, it stops being about purifying yourselves, or stepping on your ego, because Allah knows it’s almost impossible these days.
There’s no more Tarikat. So the concentration now is service. Because you can sit and say, ‘La illaha ilallah, La illaha ilallah, La illaha ilallah…’ millions of times trying to purify your heart, but maybe all that zikr done in ghaflet with the wrong intention, for nothing sake, it is just for you. It means very little compared to feeding a hungry cat or a hungry dog. Isn’t it?
One woman, she was a prostitute, and during the time of the Holy Prophet (asws), she enter into Paradise. Because she fed, she gave water to a thirsty animal, a dying animal. Now what do you think is going to happen to that murid that is going to let animal under his care to almost die from hunger and thirst? That blessings was great, you think the punishment is not going to be great too?
So now, you are doing so much, but maybe it means nothing, all of that nafila ibadat that you are doing compared to a single small service that you are doing in the way of Allah. so run to do service. We are not running to become Ahle Zikr. We are not running to become Saliheen. We are running to become Abdullah. We are running to become servants.
So run to areas, to places that they are going to wake you up, teaching you, concentrating on making you useful and to be of service to people while keeping all your obligations. This much I can say.
