Ayuhal Mu’minoon Haziroon, O you Believers who are present. Today is Yaumul Jummah. Today is the seventh day of the sacred month of Muharram. Welcome to you in this Holy day. And in two days, O Believers, we will be welcoming one of the Holiest day that Allah swt has sent down on His creations. And what day is that? The Blessed day of Ashura.
The Holy Prophet (asws) is saying in his Hadiths e-Sharif, that is being transmitted through Ghaus Ul Azam Sheykh Abd Qadir Jailani (qs), saying, ‘if someone fast on the day of Ashura, he will be granted the spiritual rewards of ten thousand Angels. If someone fast on the day of Ashura, he will be granted the spiritual reward of ten thousand Martyrs as well as the spiritual reward of ten thousand Hajis and people who do umrah. If someone stroke the head of an orphan with his hand on the day of Ashura, for every hair on the orphan’s head, Allah swt will raise him by one degree in the Garden of Paradise. If someone provides a believer with a meal to break his fast on the night of Ashura, it will be as if he just provide an iftar to the whole ummati Muhammad and had filled their stomach to the capacity.’
And the Sahabi e-Kiram said, ‘Ya Rasulullah, it looks like Allah swt has given preference to the day of Ashura over all the other days,’ and the Holy Prophet answered, ‘Yes,’ and said, ‘Allah swt created the Heavens on the Day of Ashura. He created the mountains on the Day of Ashura. He created the Oceans on the Day of Ashura. He created the Pen on the Day of Ashura. He created the Tablet on the Day of Ashura. He created Adam on the Day of Ashura and He calls him to enter the Garden of Paradise on the Day of Ashura. Ibrahim (as) was born on the Day of Ashura and Allah swt delivered him from the fire of Nimrod on the Day of Ashura. That He saves his son from being sacrificed on the Day of Ashura. He cause Firaun to drown on the Day of Ashura. Allah swt relieved Ayub (as) of his trials and tribulations on the Day of Ashura. Allah swt accepted the tauba of Adam (as) on the Day of Ashura. Allah swt relented to Daud (as) on the Day of Ashura. Isa (as) was born on the Day of Ashura. And the Day of Judgment will be on the Day of Ashura.’ In another Hadiths, Prophet (asws) is saying the ship of Nuh (as) found safety on the Day of Ashura.
O Believers, we must understand the Holiness of this day in the sight of Lord of the Universes. Are we understanding how sacred, how blessed, how important this day is? If we sit down for just a moment and reflect on this hadiths, we understand that the amazing events that happened in this history of this dunya when Allah swt has shown His mercy to the children of Adam, has happened on the Day of Ashura. It is a day of deliverance. It is a day of forgiveness. It is a day of Mercy.
And in this day we should be busy with looking, we should be busy, looking at the wrong things that we have done. Don’t look to the wrong things that others have done or what we imagine other people have done. Look to your own self. Be busy with yourself. If you are forgiving, Allah will be forgiving. We should be busy taking account of ourselves. We should be busy with begging our Lord, Allah swt to forgive us for our disobedience, for our arrogance, for our stubbornness, for our pride, for our jealousy, for our selfishness, for our ghaflat. And we should ask to come back to the straight path, to become His sincere servant.
Look at the names that Holy Prophet (asws) has mentioned in that hadiths. Hz Adam, Hz Nuh, Hz Ibrahim, Hz Ismail, Hz Musa, Hz Daud, Hz Isa, alaihi salam. Allah swt showed all of them His special favour. He helped them in their most difficult situation. He opened their road on this day of Ashura. Because they were His obedient servants. Because they were running in the way of Allah. Because they were carrying the mission that they had been given for the sake of Allah. If we want the mercy of Allah, if we want the help of Allah, if we want the favour of Allah, we must be living, we must be dying for the sake of Allah. If we are for Him, if we are for His Holy Prophet, if we are for their friends, then maybe the day of Ashura will bring opening to us and make things easier for us because yes, the disobedient ones, they have their punishment. But the obedient ones, they were saved on the day of Ashura. The disobedient ones, they perished on Ashura. The disobedient one from the nation of Nuh, Nimrod and Firaun, they were not saved on Ashura. They were punished on that day.
So which category are we fitting in to? How are we living? We must sit and we must ask ourselves honestly; ‘am I on the side of Ibrahim (as)? Or am I on the side of Nimrod? Am I on the side of Musa (as)? Or am I on the side of Firaun? Am I on the side of Rasulullah (asws)? or am I on the side of Abu Jahil?’ Because for every righteous servant of Allah swt, there is an opposite disobedient servant. So are we the good servant of Allah? or are we the disobedient ones?
And in this day of Ashura, 1375 years ago, one of the most beloved ones to Allah swt, one of the most righteous servant of Allah, the syahid of Karbala, Sayidinna Husain ibn Ali (ra), he and all those with him, they stood up for Haqq. And on the side of batil was standing Yezid and all of his powerful forces.
And as we all know in that battle of Karbala, 61 years after the Hijra, on the 10th of Muharram, those who claimed to be muslims, they butchered the family of the Holy Prophet (asws). It is easy for us to say that we are Husaini, it is easy for us to curse Yazid and say we are not Yazidi. But where is our proves? Our proves is just coming from our words? From our claims?
There were those who were on the way to Karbala and were saying they were on the side of Hz Husain. They marched with him all the way to Karbala. Of course, hundreds of thousands marched with him from the beginning, and hundreds of thousands, they betrayed him. And by the time they reached Karbala, only a handful were there. But when the battle approached, as our Sheykh is saying, Hz Husain said to the handful that were with him, because he understood where their hearts are, he understood how weak they were. He understood that they were going to betray him. Hz Husain said to them, ‘you all came here with me, I know, so many of you want to leave, so many of you thinking that Yazid is just bluffing. But he is not. By tomorrow noon time, we may not be here. So many of you are around me because you are waiting for me to be Khalifa and for you to have the dunya. The door is open. I will not complain about you on the judgment day that you left me alone. I know after so many days you are feeling shy to leave me. But you really don’t want to be here.’
He said to them, ‘there is no moon tonight. I’m going inside my tent. By fajr prayer, you can leave, everyone of you, in that darkness. I will never complain about you.’ They screamed out to Hz Husain, ‘Ya Husain, our lives are sacrifice for you!’ But by the morning time, everyone had left. They left the family of the Prophet to be killed in the land of Karbala. They claimed to be Husaini but their names were written in the book of Traitors.
So we cannot claim that we are Husaini if there is no proves. What is the proves of being a Husaini? What is the proves of being a Hakkani? It is to live and die for the sake of Allah, not for our father, not for our mother, not for our children, not for this dunya, not for our comfort, not for our ideologies. It is not by word, it is by action. And the man who lives and die for Allah, he lives and die for the Holy Prophet. And the man who lives and die for the Holy Prophet (asws), he lives and die for his Sheykh and the one who lives and die for his Sheykh, he lives and die for the mission of his Sheykh. He lives for the mission of his Sheykh and he die for the mission of his Sheykh, and what his Sheykh has left. Whether his Sheykh is in front of him, or he is veiled. Just like Allah swt is saying in the Holy Quran, ‘Obey Allah, obey the Prophet and obey your rightly guided leaders.’
We must check ourselves if we are being disobedient to the order of our Sheykh. If we are being disobedient, definitely we are Yazidi. If we are following our ego, definitely we are worse than Yazid, worse than Nimrod, worse than Firaun. Just like Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi (qs) is saying, ‘your spirit, your religion, your mission, is your Husain. Your desires and wrong wishes are pigs and dogs. You are killing your Husain through thirst yet you feed the pigs and the dogs. Why do you curse Yazid and the ones who killed Husain? You are the murderer. You are Yazid. Because you are killing your own Husain.’
Listen to the words of SahibulSaif. He is saying, ‘this is not a fairy-tale. I know that none of you have understood the seriousness of this. I know. But maybe you will. But before that, maybe you will and I hope, I hope that you will understand. There is nothing worth in this dunya and everything in it to sacrifice for. Believe me, sacrifice yourself for Allah and for His Prophet, for His religion. There is nothing else. That time, you live forever. That time you are going to live forever, you are going to gain that forever. All that you are running after, they are going to leave you one day. This world, is the world of traitors now. Don’t forget, for males and females. No man should think that they are better than the betrayers of Hz Husain. No females should say that they are better than Hz Hasan’s wife who poison Hz Hasan. Think on it. Think. Yes. The same ego that was there is inside of you. No man should think that they are better than Yazid, their ego. No man should think that they are better than those people who had betrayed Hz Husain. If you are really believing on that, only when you are believing and living according to that, when you are watching the Yazid that is inside of you then you will be on the side of Husain. Definitely.
We are asking our Lord Allah swt to never let us betray. We are asking our Lord Allah swt to keep us on the side of Haqq, to keep us on the side of Husain and all the Husaini. We are asking Allah swt to keep us always next to our Sheykh, SahibulSaif Sheykh Abd Kerim el-Kibrisi el Rabbani and to never let us deviate.
