Question: What causes us to deviate from the way of our Prophet (asws)?
What causes us to deviate from the way of our Prophet (asws)? To deviate, meaning you found the Prophet (asws), and you are following, then later you change your mind. Isn’t that what it means? To deviate? You are first in the Siratul Mustaqim, in the straight path, then you make a deviation.
The deviation, in so many ways, it’s even worse than not finding the truth. A deviation from the truth is even worse than not finding the truth. Because the person who has not found the truth, he may find the truth. But if the person has deviated from the truth, he already found the truth but he chose now willingly to go to a wrong direction and even if he’s brought to the right direction again, chances are, he’s going to continue to deviate. Because he says, ‘yes, I’ve been here before. There’s nothing here for me.’ Which is why in our daily prayer, in the Surahtul Fatiha, the first chapter of the Quran; seven verses, that no prayer it is sah, it is accepted, if you don’t recite this surahtul Fatiha, and in that surah, Allah, these are the words of Allah, Allah is making us to say, ‘Ihdinasiratul mustaqeem –Guide us to the straight path. Keep us on the straight path.’
Some people, they are even changing the Fatiha especially in front of a different crowd, they read Fatiha, mashaAllah, very good, ‘Al ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi l-’ālamīn,’ they give translation, ‘Ar raḥmāni r-raḥīm. Māliki yawmi d-dīn. Iyyāka na’budu wa iyyāka nasta’īn – to You alone we worship, to You alone we ask for help. Ihdinā ṣ-ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm – Guide us to the straight path.’ Then they stop there. It is not accepted. Because the last two ayats, Allah made it clear what is a deviation. ‘Ṣirāṭ al-laḏīna an’amta ‘alayhim ġayril maġḍūbi ‘alayhim walāḍ ḍāllīn.’ Guide us to the straight path. The path of what? The path of those that You have accepted. That You are pleased and they are pleased with You. ‘ġayril maġḍūbi ‘alayhim walāḍ ḍāllīn – not the path of those who deviate and those who are pulling Your anger because of their disobedience.’
So now, Allah is explaining very clearly how you are going to deviate from the truth. Some they are cutting out those last two ayats because they say this crowd maybe fit into that category, we don’t want to make them upset, so we are not going to say.
So what causes us to deviate from the way of the Prophet? You found the way of the Prophet (asws), you found truth, you found the light, what causes you now, you found the light, you find the sun, for you to close your eyes and to block and to say, ‘there is nothing there. I don’t want to.’ What causes a man to do that? This is the most important point in spirituality. What is a man who is able to do that? The man who is blind. But even if you are blind, physically you are blind, you can feel the Sun. You don’t have to see. And there is an eye behind the eye, and you are able to see. But what causes the man to deny the truth now?
When he blinds himself. And the blindness is fake, it’s artificial. That blindness is coming from your ego. It’s coming from stubbornness. It’s coming from arrogance. It’s coming from anger. It’s coming from envy. That blindness is cause by all these four. And Tarikat, Sufism is concentrating in how to remove this blindness. Because now the whole Ummat, not at one point, for thirteen hundred years the whole Ummat, couple are exceptions of groups of people here and there, were ahle Sunnat, following the traditions of the Prophet and traditions of his companions. What cause us as an Ummat to deviate from the way of the Prophet? To say we don’t want the way of the Prophet, we want to live our own way, what cause us to do that?
They say in Turkish, ‘the fish, it stinks from the head.’ It rots from the head. So many people, they are just following. Those that are leaders and cause them to follow, these are the ones mostly they are responsible. So what cause the whole Ummat now, to turn away from the way of the Prophet (asws)? They remove the Khilafat. Once they remove the Khalifah, who is the Khalifah? Is the Khalifatul Rasul. Khalifah means a representative, and the one who is representing the Prophet (asws). So once you move the representative, you are declaring, ‘we don’t want the Prophet’s laws, we don’t want his way. We want our own way.’And what is that different way? Thirteen hundred years, you are following the Prophet’s way, what makes us to overnight change all of this?
That change in the Islamic civilisation, in the Islamic Empire was very brutal, was very drastic. It changed overnight. It was very abrupt. They changed the head and they put a new head and the new head says, ‘stop wearing Islamic clothes. Stop using Quranic alphabet. Stop concentrating on your Deen, on your religion, on spirituality. Concentrate on this world. concentrate on this dunya.’ This dunya that Allah says, ‘I’ve not given the value of one wing of a mosquito to this world.’
So it is this world. They make you to fall in love with this world. Because the way of the Prophet is making us to fall in love with Allah and the Ahiret and the Hereafter. And the opposite of Hereafter is this world. They removed the head and they are saying, ‘what are you concentrating on the Hereafter? We are here in this dunya.’ And so many Muslims, I heard, so much saying, ‘we have to concentrate on this world. because isn’t the prayer saying, the prayer of the Prophet, “give us the best of this world and give us the best of the Hereafter.”‘
Because the believers version of this world is different. The Salihs version of this world is different. How the Prophet wants from this world is different. The unbelievers version of this world is different. The one who follows his ego and his desires version is different. To the Prophet, ‘give us the best of this world,’ what do they mean? To the Muqmins, to say, ‘give us the best of this world,’ what do they mean?
You think the Prophets and the believers, they mean, ‘give us palaces, give us fancy cars, give us gadgets and technology. Give us whatever we want to fulfil out desires in this world.’ You think that is their meaning when they say, when they pray, when the Prophet they asked, ‘give us the best of this world.’ That is the prayer of the people of this world. Their prayer would be give us the best of this world, give us the best of the Palaces. Give us the best of the lifestyle. And we have been conditioned for that for the past hundred and hundred and fifty years, and we left the way. Because we removed now, the way of the Prophet (asws). We removed the Khalifah, and they brought new heads that stink, that is leading the Ummat to the wrong direction. And they appeal to what? How the population now, following the Prophet, they can be pulled to the dunya or they can be pulled to the ego or thinking they are following the Prophet, they are pulled to so much violence, they are pulled to so much cruelty.
How can they be pulled?
If their egos are pulled. They can be pulled that way. Very simple. May Allah keep us in the way of the Prophet (asws). The way of the Prophet (asws) is not contained in books. It is not contained in website or the internet. The way of the Prophet (asws) is shown, is taught, is contained in men and these are the ones who are his inheritors, and these are Awliya Allah, the friends of Allah. Hold on to them, you will find the way to the Prophet (asws).
SelamAleykum. This much is enough.
