Question: How can we gain the twelve good characteristics of dogs?
The Characteristics of a dog that Sheykh Maulana has said, the Prophets and the Saints of Allah they share these twelve characteristics. And in order to gain these twelve characteristics, follow your Prophet properly. Follow the Awliya Allah properly. Be their dogs. Wahabbis they hate this: when we said to be the dog of the Prophet, to be the dogs of the Awliya Allah. Be their dog. It’ll be an honour for us if they say, ‘you are my dog.’ Because a dog has characteristics that so many humans they don’t have. They are loyal, good natured. Master may, not that I’m advocating this, that happens everywhere, Master may hit them they get upset, they don’t get upset, they whine. Master may say, ‘No!’ and throw things at them, and they’re running, whining. They are looking at their Master. Master looks at them, their tail starts wagging and they start coming. They are zahid. They sleep anywhere. They are not making palaces to live in this world, to sleep. They sleep somewhere. People come, throw rocks, stones at them. They get up. They move to another place.
In the Osmanli Dergahi, we are going to put this: the twelve characteristics of the dog, everywhere. We want to be like that. We don’t want to be thrown into non-existence. So many humans will be thrown into non-existence, especially the Ahir Zaman, they will be perished. But the dog that was loyal to the Ahle Kahf, the people of the cave, that dog that Paradise that is for human (Paradise is not permitted for animals to enter), but that dog because of the loyalty that he shown to his masters, guarding them, that dog is mention in the Quran and he is going to be admitted to Paradise. If our Sheykh says, ‘you are like my dog,’ You should be very honoured. Of course, not like the dogs of today. Dogs of today are very spoiled, or they are very abused.
I still remember Sheykh Effendi first visit to Virginia. Sheykh Effendi was singing a lot of Ilahis that day. Everyone was crying; those who understand Turkish, those who don’t understand Turkish. They start hugging and crying. Some of our brothers get very upset too. They were crying and hugging each other so much. I remember once, I don’t understand Turkish but when Sheykh Effendi wants to make me to understand something, I understand. And one Ilahi Sheykh Effendi is saying, ‘let me be like the Kitmeer, ya Rasulullah. Let me be your kitmeer.’ What is a kitmeer? Kitmeer is the name of the dog that was with the seven sleepers and this illahis was written by a Saint hundred of years ago, saying, ‘let me be your dog, ya Rasulullah.’
Prophet (asws) is such a great one, a Holy one. We have no business to be next to him, no matter how much we love him, unless there is a job that he assigns us to do. We are asking, may we be worthy to become the kitmeer of our Sheykh. InsyaAllah. This much is enough. May Allah swt raise the station of our Sheykh higher and higher and may his Himmet be always be upon us. InsyaAllah. Al-Fatiha.
Hoja Lokman Effendi Hz, Khalifah of Sheykh Abdul Kerim al-Hakkani al-Kibrisi QS, Osmanli Dergahi.
