I’m not a Muslim but I’m feeling drawn to know what faith is. What should I do?

BismillahirRahmanirRahim

Question: I’m not a Muslim but I’m feeling drawn to begin to study or pray because  I desire to know what faith is. I believe but I doubt I have the mind heart and soul to keep my faith. It troubles me so much and keeps me up at night. I don’t want to die not having a relationship with my Maker. I have no real knowledge of my maker at all, what to call Him or how to speak to Him. What should I do?

It is easy. Because our Maker, our Creator, He is closer to us than our jugular veins, and He is always speaking to us. He had asked us a question in pre-eternity, “Alastu Birabbikum – Am I not your Lord?” We answered Him in pre-eternity: Qalu Bala, yes You are.  That question of Alastu Birabbikum – am I not your Lord,  Allah is continuously asking us. Right now He is asking us: “Am I not your Lord?” And the way that we live, is an answer to that question.

You want to have a relationship with Him? Very easy. Answer Him. Say: Yes, You are. Yes, You are my Lord. Yes , You are my Creator. I want to be with You. I don’t know what to do. Send someone that is going to teach me how to come close to You. Send someone who is going to teach me how to have a better relationship to You. Send someone that will teach me how to come to You. Sit and wait. Allah will send. The more sincere you are, the quicker it’s going to be. Don’t need to go to anyone. You don’t trust anyone, you have no feelings for anyone, sit by yourself, in your room, sit down and speak to Him. He will answer.

You want to come closer to Him? Put your head down to the ground. That is an action to say, ‘I am submitting myself to You. I am begging You. I’m asking You.’ Because Holy Prophet (asws) is saying, ‘the servant is closest to Allah swt when he’s making the prostration, the sujud, the sejdah.’ And speak your heart. From that time until you meet someone that He has sent, relax. When you meet someone that He has sent, that time, empty your heart. Empty your heart, and ask. As much that he knows, he will say. You cannot say more than that. Then we will take it from there. InsyaAllah ar-Rahman.

That’s good. This is you calling out to your Lord, to Allah, but in reality it is Allah that is calling to you. Because Allah’s question to us, it is before our answer to Him. So He’s calling. You are not sure what to call Him? We call Him, Allah. If you like to use that word, use it. If you want to use other words, according to whatever that you are comfortable with. But give Him the word that fits to His station. Call Him Maker. Call Him Creator. Call Him the Most Gentle One. Call Him The Merciful. Call Him the Compassionate. O Most Compassionate One. Say, ‘I want to reach out to You. Help me.’

Then, when someone comes to you, that is the time the next phase enters, that is the time, you have more responsibility. Because the knowledge comes with the responsibility. That time, don’t be arrogant. Don’t be stubborn. Don’t be arrogant and don’t be Stubborn, and listen. Empty your heart, and insyaAllah ar-Rahman, sincerely you will find your way back. insyaAllah. May Allah make it easy. SelamAleykum.
