All praises are due to Allah, Lord of the Universes. All praises are due to Allah who is All Powerful, without any need. All praises are due to Allah Who has created everything from nothing. All praises are due to Allah Who has created and honored the Children of Adam. All praises are due to Allah Who sent the Most Honored One a the Rahmatalil Alameen. And may all peace and blessings be upon the Mercy to the Universes, the Beloved of Allah, the Owner of the Maqam alMahmud, the Guest of the Miraj, the Seal of the Prophethood, Sayyidina Muhammad (asws), and upon his noble family and blessed companions, especially upon the Four Khulafa-e-Rashideen, Hz. Abu Bakr el-Siddiq, Hz. Umar el-Faruq, Hz. Osman el-Ghani, and Hz. Ali el-Murtaza, and all those who follow them until the Last Day.
Ayyuhal Mu’minoon! O Believers! Welcome to you. Welcome to you on this Holy Day ofJummah that is falling on the second day of the Eid el-Adha. Welcome to you as we have cut our Kurban and we are making intention that it is accepted and pleasing to our Lord, Allah (swt).
O Believers! Allah (swt) is saying in the Holy Quran: ‘It is He Who brought you forth from the wombs of your mothers when you knew nothing; and He gave you hearing and sight and intelligence and affection: that you may give thanks to Allah. (16:78).’ And in anotherayat Allah (swt) is saying: BismillahirRahmanirRahim. Then remember Me; I will remember you. Be grateful to Me, and do not reject Me, do not make kufr. (2: 152).
And Holy Prophet (asws) is saying in his Hadith Sherif: Allah (swt) is pleased with His servant who says Alhamdulillah when he takes a bite of food or a sip of water. And Hz. Aisha (ra) is narrating that one night Holy Prophet (asws) was worshipping so much and standing so long in prayer that his feet became swollen. So she asked him, ‘Ya Rasulallah, why do you worship like this if Allah (swt) has made you free from any mistakes or sins?’ And Holy Prophet (asws) answered, ‘Shouldn’t I be a thankful servant? Shouldn’t I be‘Abdan Shakura?’
O Believers. In these days of Zul Hijjah, in these days of Kurban, these are the days for us to be thanking to our Lord, Allah swt. Because Allah (swt) is deserving that we must makeshukr to Him. As it is saying in the Ayat, Allah (swt) created us from nothing. And then He made us grow in the wombs of our mothers, and we were born. And then we came into this world, and we grew, and we began to walk, and we began to speak, and we began to have intelligence and to have affection. We have eyes, we have ears, we have lungs. Every single moment of our existence is full of uncountable treasures and blessings that Allah (swt) has granted to us. And Allah (swt) is not asking for anything in return. All He is saying is Remember Me and make Shukr to Me. And that Zikr and that Shukr, it is not for Him, it is for us again! Because Allah (swt) is saying that if we remember Him, He remembers us, and if we make shukr to Him, He will increase us. So no matter what we do, we can never fulfill the thankfulness to our Lord, Allah (swt).
So what is the proper way for us to show Shukr? We are in the days of Kurban, and the days of Kurban are the days of Ibrahim (as). And Allah (swt) is describing Ibrahim (as) in the Holy Quran saying: BismillahirRahmanirRahim. He showed his thankfulness for the favors of Allah, who chose him, and guided him to a Straight Path. (16:121). How was Hz. Ibrahim (as) showing Shukr to Allah (swt)? Ibrahim (as) words are preserved in the Holy Quran forever, for all of us to hear, because he was saying to Allah (swt):BismillahirRahmanirRahim. Indeed, my prayer and my service of sacrifice, my life and my death, are for Allah, Lord of the Universes. He was showing his thankfulness to Allah (swt) through his life, through his service, throught the Hizmet. He was showing his thankfulness to Allah (swt) by running to be in His service, because the service is the work of a servant. He was showing his thankfulness by running to sacrifice in the Way of Allah (swt). That is the way of Shukr. Just like Holy Prophet (asws), he was using his every breath of life running in the Way of Allah to show his thankfulness to Allah (swt). As our Sheykh, Sahib el-Sayf Sheykh Abdul Kerim el-Kibrisi el-Rabbani (ks) is saying: We are thanking for the favors He is granting to us. Thankfulness is not just to say`Alhamdulillah’ and `I am a thankful servant’. No. Man must run to try to keep the orders of Allah (swt), and try to run away from the acts that Allah (swt) has forbidden. If we are making that intention, running towards that way and keeping it that way then inshaAllah ar-Rahman we will find and we will stay on Sirat-ul Mustaqim.
And Seyh Efendi is also saying: Allah (swt) is saying to us, `If you are a believer, if you believe and you will be a thankful servant, why Allah has to punish you?’ That’s the Ayat.Allah is questioning us, saying to us, `If you are a believer, if you believe in Allah, and you will be a thankful servant to Allah, why you think that Allah has to punish you?’ Hmm. Are you comfortable with that? When you hear that Ayat are you comfortable to say,`Alhamdulillah, I have no problem with You Ya Rabbi. Shukr Ya Rabbi.’ Are you sincerely saying that? If you are not saying it then you must be on the other side. Rush quickly to turn to this side. Move fast. Leave everything to turn to this side. Otherwise, when the rope is cut you are going to stand on the wrong side. And when you are staying on the wrong side then you are going to stay with the wrong ones. You are not going to be with Ahl-e Haqq. You can call yourself now `Hakkani’ but you are not going to be Hakkani then. You are not defending the truth in reality in your own self.
So, days are passing, weeks are passing, years are passing. No matter what happens, the world and everything in it is running to their end. And Allah (swt) created man in Ahsani Taqweem, the most perfect one, the most perfect creature and He is saying to us that He has created everything for the service of man. And He has created man for His service. Check yourself. Look at it. Look at yourself what you are busy with. You will understand then if you are in the service of Allah or you are in the service of Sheytan. If you are not in the service of Allah then you are in the service of Sheytan.
This is Shukr. It is not a simple matter of just saying Alhamdulillah. This is Shukr, whether we are making Shukr, how we are making Shukr, in reality it is showing our faith. It is showing whether we are sincere or whether we have hypocrisy in our hearts. If we are not showing our thankfulness to Allah (swt), showing His thankfulness from running to fulfill His orders and running away from things that He has forbidden, if we are not running for His Pleasure to show our thankfulness, if we are not sacrificing in His Path, then we are not counted to be amongst the Defenders of the Truth that our Sheykh is describing.
So this door of Shukr, it is the door to obedience and submission, it is the door to the Pleasure of Allah (swt). But don’t think that you are going to enter to the door of Shukr without first entering to the door of tauba. Because until we understand of the Jahiliyyah ways, the wrong ways, how we are living our lives that is running away from the orders of Allah swt and running towards His anger, until we understand that, until we have made tauba, we will never understand then the favors of our Lord. If we don’t make tauba, we can never be able to make shukr. and those who are in tauba, they are already at the door of shukr.
Allah (swt) will not accept our thankfulness until we thank those ones He has sent to us. Holy Prophet (asws) is saying, The one who does not thank the people does not thank Allah. So that Shukr, that sacrifice, that service, it goes first to the one who has taught us about Allah (swt). It goes to the one who has taught us about the Holy Prophet (asws). It goes to the one who has taught us about the Evliyaullah. It goes to that Master that is connecting us, and training us, and guiding us to be the Servants of Allah (swt). So before anything, we must be showing Shukr to our Guide, the One who is protecting and helping us and showing the way. We must be showing him our service.
Who is that guide? In these days of Ibrahim (as), who is that guide? Are we understanding our guide. Are we trying to understand and discover our guide, daily? If we don’t understand our guide, if we don’t understand our Sheykh, we will not understand the Prophet of Allah swt. It is impossible. And everyday should reveal a new splendor coming from Him. Holy Prophet (asws) said, ‘forty of my followers in my ummat will always be on earth whose heart will be like the heart of Ibrahim (as). It is because of them that Allah (swt) will withhold the punishment from the people on the earth. They are called the Abdals. They would have attain that status, that stations, not through prayers, fasting or charity.’ So the companions asked, ‘Ya Rasulullah, how else would they have achieved that station?’ He (asws) replied, ‘through generosity and sincerity towards the ummat.’ And our guide is a servant of the Most Generous. And his whole life was to be generous and sincere towards towards the ummat.
Kurban, we are thanking our Lord, Allah (swt), for sending us a Master who is from His Closest Friends, and we are making intention to be showing the shukr, showing the service, showing the sacrifice to him. In these days of Kurban, we are renewing our intention to live and die by the words of our Father Ibrahim (as), saying: Indeed, my prayer and my service of sacrifice, my life and my death, are for Allah, Lord of the Universes. Amin..
