Question: I try my best to work on myself, I listen to sohbets and take them seriously. I cry and worry because I am full of disease inside and I want to get rid of them. I am trying everyday but something tells me I keep failing. What should I do?
Don’t listen to that something that tells you that you keep failing. Who are you following? You are following a Sheykh, you are following your father who follows a Sheykh, you are following people and you love them who are following a Sheykh? Listen to them don’t listen to that something, because the enemy inside of us always wants to sabotage. You cannot trust that.
You are sick, before you go to the Doctor you are going to ask everyone what is this disease, did you ever hear about this? You read everywhere. Once you find a Doctor and he’s telling you, giving you all the tests and everything properly, why you have to go around listening to other people? Are they Doctors? No. Are they giving you medicine? No, they are not. You are only confusing yourself. So this is another way of stepping on your ego. You have to cut that off. You say, ‘this is not coming from Haqq. It is something, something is telling me, I’m not going to listen.’ Who are you going to listen to? People who give you good advice, people who listen to their Sheykh, people who listen to the Prophet (asws). Listen to them. You are not going to just listen to everyone. If you don’t have that discipline then its just going to sabotage you.
You say you listen to Sohbet, you take them seriously, you are worrying and you want to get rid of them and you are trying. All these things that you are doing also it has to be done in moderation. What does that mean? It has to be done with the Doctor’s orders. You are sick, you know need to take medicine. Can you just take the medicine any time you want, however much you want, whenever you want? No. You have to get a prescription from the Doctor. The Doctor has to say only take this once a day not twice, only take this on an empty stomach not when your stomach is full. If you don’t listen to the instructions, even when it is a medicine, it is going to make you to become more sick now.
So you are taking and you are listening to Sohbets and you are putting it and you are trying to do everything, how much consultation did you make? Sometimes people are listening and it’s just too much and they are not understanding, they don’t know how to balance things. Which is why it is very important now for everyone to spend time in the Dergah. In the Dergah now you learn how to balance certain things. You cannot be in that state all the time, it is going to drive you crazy. In the Dergah, if anything we are more busy with daily physical activities than we are with the other activities. The physical activities is supposed to open up the Sohbets, the physical activities that you are doing it is not separate from the Sohbet, separate from Tasawwuf, separate from Spirituality. It is suppose to put it in practice and to open up. The Tasawwuf is not to just sit down and to think. No, Prophet (asws) did not just do that, the Sahabi-e Kiram did not just do that. Now you have to be busy. Where there is activity there is going to be blessing, where there is a blessing there is going to be a what? A Mohabbat, there’s going to be service.
So now in order to understand all of that, in Sohbet too you take as much as you can, only under prescription. You cannot take more than that. After a while you will understand, ‘okay this is as much as I can take. I can listen to it over and over, I need now to be physically there.’ Find a way. Allah swt has made it very easy for us in these days to be in the physical presence of our Sheykh, of the Dergah, of your guide. In the old days it is almost impossible to do that but now it is very easy. It depends, if you think it is important or not. If it is very important, if you are dying and you know the cure is here you are going to be here on the next flight. If you are treating your own spiritual diseases as something that is very serious, you will move heaven and earth to be here. If you think that it is not something that is so serious and you can just get it from here and there then you are not going to benefit too much. May Allah make it easy for you. InsyaAllah.
