All praises are due to Allah, Lord of all the Worlds. All Glory is to He who took His Servant (Sayyidina Muhammad (asws)) by night from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing (17:1). And may all peace and blessings be upon the Owner of the Crown, the Guest of the Miraj, the Rider of the Buraq, the Flagbearer of the Banner of Allah, the Possessor of the Qaba Qawsayn, Sayyidina wa Mawlana Muhammad (asws). And may all peace and blessings be upon his noble family and blessed companions, especially upon the Four Khulafa-e-Rashideen, Hz. Abu Bakr el-Siddiq, Hz. Umar el-Faruq, Hz. Osman el-Ghani, and Hz. Ali el-Murtaza, and all those who follow them until the Last Day.
Allahumma Barik Lana Fi Rajab wa Shaban, wa Ballighna Ramazan.
Ya Ayyuhal Mu’minoon! O Believers! Welcome to you on this Holy Day of Jummah, in the Holy Month of Allah, this 22nd day of Shahru Rajab. Welcome to you as we are about to enter into one of the Holiest Nights that ever happened in the history of the earth and the history of the Paradises. Welcome to you, O Believers, as we are about to commemorate celebrate and commemorate the Holy Night of Miraj.
What is Miraj? Allah (swt) is describing that Night when He invited His Habib in the Holy Quran, saying: BismillahirRahmanirRahim. By the Star when it descends; Your Companion (Muhammad) is neither astray nor being misled. Nor does he say anything of (his own) Desire. It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: He was taught by one Mighty in Power, Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form); While he was in the highest part of the horizon: Then he approached and came closer, And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. The heart did not lie in seeing what it saw. Will you then dispute with him concerning what he saw? For indeed he saw Him at a second descent, Near Sidratul Muntaha beyond which none may pass: Near it is the Garden of Abode. Behold, Sidratul Muntaha was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!) His sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! (53:1-18). Sadaqallahul adzim.
Ya Ayyuhal Mu’minoon! The Miraj is the Night that Allah (swt) invited His Beloved, Sayyidina Muhammad (asws), into His Presence, and Honored him as none other has ever been honored, and as no one else will ever be honored. O Believers! We must be ready to celebrate and honor this Night. The Muslims of today, the Muslims of the 21st Century, so many are not celebrating Miraj, and they don’t care. The Holy Prophet (asws) ascended to all of the Heavens and Beyond the Sidarul Muntaha, but his ummat they don’t care. They are saying it is a Biddat to remember this day and honor this day. Let them ignore the Miraj, it’s okay, just like Abu Jahl and his friends ignored the Miraj. Insha’Allah we will follow the Way of Hz. Abu Bakr el-Siddiq and honor and believe in the Miraj.
But even from those who are celebrating the Miraj, they are concentrating only on the Miraculous part of the Night-Journey. And they are not mentioning the circumstances that were in place that led to the Miraj. And we must remember those circumstances. We must remember the condition that Holy Prophet (asws) was placed in before the Miraj, because only then can we understand the foundation from which the Miraj came.
Yes, the Miraj was a great honor for the Holy Prophet (asws). But that Honor, it came out of the Year of Sadness. That year that was happening, it was called the year of Sadness for the Rasulallah (asws). Because during this year, the Quraysh, the Holy Prophet (asws)’s own tribe, they placed a boycott on Rasulallah and the Muslims. Nobody could buy and sell with them. Nobody could give food to them. Nobody could give water to them. The situation became so difficult that the believers had to eat roots and leather. And during this difficult time, his beloved uncle Abu Talib, the one who had protected him from the Quraysh and supported him in every condition, he passed away. And within three days, the beloved wife of the Holy Prophet (asws), Hz. Khadijah (ra), she passed away. His wife of 25 years. His wife that had covered him after he had his first vision of Jibril (as). His wife who no matter what the situation, was always his supporter and helper, she passed away. And Holy Prophet (asws), as our Seyh is saying, he was feeling very alone.
O Believers! Don’t listen to this just like it’s from a history book. Understand this. The Holy Prophet (asws)’s father passed away before he was even born. His mother passed away when he was a small child. His grandfather, Abdul-Muttalib, who was his protector, passed away when the Holy Prophet (asws) was a child. And Abu Talib had been like his father for his whole life, and now he was gone. And Hz. Khadijah, who had supported and believed in him for 25 years, she was also now taken away from him. Imagine that in three years, your father and your wife are taken away from you.And beyond this, because the protection of Abu Talib was gone, the Quraysh began to think that they had free license to abuse the Holy Prophet (asws). And they began to beat him when they would see him near the Ka’ba.
So Rasulallah (asws) went to visit his cousin tribe in Taif, to see if they would accept Islam and welcome the Muslims into their city, because he had relatives, his own blood, living in in that city. But instead of finding protection there, Holy Prophet (asws) was faced with cruelty and tyranny. They sent the slaves and the children outside to pelt the Holy Prophet (asws) with stones, so much that his sandals became soaked with his blood. O Believers! Put yourselves in this situation. He went to his own family with the hope that they would accept Islam and show protection, and instead they pelted him with stones and showed cruelty. And he (asws) finally reached to a tree, and he sat under that tree. And he opened his hands and he made this dua, saying: ‘Ya Allah, to You I complain of my weakness, helplessness and lowliness before men. O Most Merciful, You are the Lord of the weak, and You are my Lord. To who will You leave my fate? To the stranger who insults me, or to an enemy that you have given power to over me? If You are not angry with me, I don’t care what happens to me. All I want is Your Pleasure. I seek protection in the Light of Your Face, the Light from which darkness is illuminated in this world, the Light on which this world and the other world depend. Don’t let me pull Your Anger or Your Wrath. It is for You to be Satisfied until You are Pleased. There is no Might and no Power except through You. Amin.’
So even through that sadness and cruelty, the Holy Prophet (asws) turned back to Allah. And his only concern was that his Lord, Allah (swt) was pleased with him. And finally, the Day before the Miraj, Holy Prophet (asws), he was sitting in front of the Kaaba. And Abu Jahl made a plan with some of his friends, that they wanted to break Holy Prophet (asws)’s heart again. So he bent down and came right up to Holy Prophet (asws)’s face, and he asked him, ‘O Muhammad, are you really a Prophet?’ Holy Prophet (asws) answered saying, ‘Yes, I am a Prophet.’ And with arrogance and cruelty, Abu Jahl said, ‘How can you be a prophet while you sit here alone? Where are all your followers? Where are all your helpers? If there was any need for another prophet, then prophethood would have come to me. Look how many followers I have, look how many companions I have.’ And then Abu Jahl got up arrogantly and walked away. And seven of the other enemies of Islam, they came to the Prophet and did the same thing.
Holy Prophet (asws) had been calling them to Islam for twelve years. And that day, sitting in front of the Kaaba, the Holy Prophet (asws), as our Seyh is saying the “man-side,”the human side of Holy Prophet (asws), he became sad. Seyh Efendi is explaining saying: He was very sad. And through that sadness, he went to sleep. So Allah Jalla wa Ala was watching. Just like now he’s watching. You are so heedless but not understanding, yes. He is watching You. Allah is watching His servant. That servant that his heart is kicking for the nation. That servant that his heart is crying for this nation. Allah is always watching that one. So the Prophet (asws) was very sad. And with that sadness he went to sleep. And just Allah Jalla wa Ala saying to his angels, ‘now go to My beloved. Don’t leave him alone. And go and show him what I have prepared for him. And the angels start coming down.’ And that night, Allah (swt) made Holy Prophet (asws) the Guest of the Miraj.
O Believers! What is the lesson that is coming to us from this Night of Miraj? The Night of Miraj, it is coming with the lesson from the Ayat, ‘Inna ma’al usri yusri, Verily with hardship comes ease.’ And Holy Prophet (asws), before he went to the Miraj, before that honor came to him, he went through those hardships of the year of sadness. He went through those hardships of twelve years of spending his energy, of putting his heart out, of calling his people day by day to Islam, and having them reject the Truth, and to become a tyrant to him and to the poor ones and to the weak ones. And the blessings of Miraj were built upon the foundation of hardship that Holy Prophet (asws) went through. After the Miraj, Madinah opened up to the Holy Prophet (asws). And after the Muslims had their own place where they could practice Islam freely and openly, Islam began to spread so fast. And within a few years, the Holy Prophet (asws) returned and he conquered Mecca. So yes, with that hardship, the ease is coming.
Evliyaullah are going through hardship. Our Sheykh went through hardship. Our Sheykh was put into the prison and tortured for speaking the Hakk. His family members left him because he was speaking the Hakk. His dunya was taken away from him because he was speaking the Hakk. But through that hardship he went through, he built this place, and he built this work. O Believers! O Murids, for me and for you, don’t walk in this Dergah lightly. Know that every step you take, you are walking on a place that has been established with the blood, with the tears, with the sweat of your Sheykh.
So Rasulallah (asws), he went through that difficulty and that hardship. Our Sheykh, our Grandsheykh, the Evliyaullah, they have gone through difficulty and hardship. And through their sacrifice, we are able to live this religion and life this Tarikat-way. O Believers! We should be ready to go through. We should be ready to sacrifice something for the Way of Allah. We should be ready to sacrifice, and to go through difficulty, to establish the Hakk. We must be thinking to say, my Rasul (asws) went through difficulty. My Sheykh went through difficulty. Ya Rabbi, please let me be sincere and give me the strength to carry anything that You are going to give to me.
Do not forget. Allah (swt) is saying in the Holy Quran, in Surah Ankabut, BismillahirRahmanirRahim. ‘Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, “We believe”, and that they will not be tested? We did test those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false. (29:2-3).’ Sadaqallahul adzim. O Believers! In these days that we are approaching the Miraj, we have to sit and think. We have to sit, and we have to prepare. The Work of Allah, it has not finished. The Work of the Rasulallah (asws), it has not finished. The Work of Sahib el-Sayf, it has not finished. In these days, we have to ask ourselves: Do I want to do that work? Am I ready for that work? Am I ready to sacrifice for that work?
O Believer! Our honor is in this work. We should live for it. We should sacrifice for it. We should die for it. Ya Rabbi, this is our intention in Your Month. Amin.
