All praises are due to Allah, Lord of the Universes. All praises are due to Allah Who has created everything from nothing. All praises are due to Allah Who created our Father Adam (as) from water and clay. All praises are due to Allah Who has honored the Children of Adam. All praises are due to Allah Who sent His Beloved, His Habib, Sayyidina Muhammad (asws), as the Mercy to the Universes. And may all peace and blessings be upon the Master of the Messengers, the Imam of the Prophets, the Owner of the Makam al-Mahmud, the Guest of the Miraj, the Most Honored One in Divine Presence, Sayyidina Muhammad (asws), and upon his noble family and blessed companions, especially upon the Four Khulafa-e-Rashideen, Hz. Abu Bakr el-Siddiq, Hz. Umar el-Faruk, Hz. Osman el-Ghani, and Hz. Ali el-Murtaza, and all those who follow them until the Last Day.
Ya Ayyuhal Mu’minoon. O Believers! Welcome to you in this Holy Day of Jummah, in the Holy Month of Shaban, the Month of the Holy Prophet (asws). O Believers! Do not ignore this month. Do not be in ghaflat in this month. Because the Holy Prophet (asws) said in his Hadith Sherif: Shaban is a month between Rajab and Ramadan. People tend to neglect it, but that is when the deeds of His servants ascends to the Lord of All the Worlds, so I would rather mine rose up while I am fasting. Elhamdulillah, we have passed through the month of Rajab and its Holy Nights, the Nights of Ragaib and Miraj. And Elhamdulillah, less than a week ago, we passed through the Holy Night of Beraat. We are asking and begging our Lord, Allah (swt), to accept our weak service during these nights, and we are asking to be forgiven. But just because we passed through these nights does not mean that we have finished our work. We have to keep our efforts up, and we have to keep on fighting against our ego. Because the work of Rajab and Shaban, it is the work of preparation for Shahru Ramazan. Insha’Allah, in about two weeks, we are going to enter into that Holy Month. And this month, the month of Shaban, it is the month of watering and taking care of the seeds that we planted during the month of Rajab. Insha’AllahurRahman, if we keep on fighting against our ego and running in the Way of Allah, we will see the good fruits come out during Ramazan.
O Believers! Allah (swt) is mentioning Ramazan in the Holy Quran, saying: BismillahirRahmanirRahim. O you who believe, fasting has been ordered upon you like it was ordered on those before you, so that you might have Taqwa. (2:183).Sadaqallahul adzim
And our Master, Ghawth al-Azam Sheykh Abdul Qadir Gilani (ks) is making us to understand how important the Month of Ramazan is, saying: The Master of the human-kind is Adam (as). The Master of the Arabs is Sayyidina Muhammad (asws). The Master of the Persians is Salman al-Farisi (ra). The Master of the Greeks is Suhayb al-Rumi (ks). The Master of the Habashis is Bilal (ra). The Master of the Towns is Mecca. The Master of the Valleys is the Valley of Bayt al-Maqdis (Quds). The Master of the Days of the week is Jummah. The Master of the Nights is Laylatul Qadr. The Master of the Holy Books is the Quran. The Master of the Quran is Surah al-Baqara. The Master of Surah Baqara is Ayatul Kursi. The Master of the Stones is the Black Stone. The Master of the Wells is Zamzam. The Master of the Canes is the Cane of Musa (as). The Master of the Fishes is the Fish that carried Yunus (as). The Master of the She-Camels is the She-Camel of Salih (as). The Master of the Horses is al-Buraq. The Master of the Rings is the Ring of Sulayman (as). And the Master of the Months is the Holy Month of Ramazan.
These are the days and nights that we are about to enter into. We need to be ready for the Month of Ramazan. Preparing for the Month of Ramazan is not just to prepare our bodies for the fasting, no. Preparing for the Month of Ramazan is to be fighting to our ego, to be perfecting our manners, to be in submission and obedience, so that when Ramazan comes, we are going to be collecting the fruits of Ramazan. Because Holy Prophet (asws) is warning us about wasting our Ramazan, saying: Many people who fast get nothing from their fast except hunger and thirst, and many people who pray at night get nothing from it except staying awake.
Hz. Umar (ra) is telling us what it means to truly fast, saying, ‘Fasting does not mean keeping away from only food and drink, it also means keeping away from lying, falsehood, useless activity, and taking promises using Allah’s name for no reason.’
So yes, in this Month of Ramazan that is coming, we should protect ourselves from all the useless activity, all the forbidden activity, all the things that are displeasing to Allah and His Messenger. Ramazan, it is not a game. It is a very serious time, and if we fail during the month, then the results are very severe. Because listen to this Hadith of Holy Prophet (AS): Two women were Fasting during the time of Holy Prophet (asws). They were so tired towards the end of the day, from hunger and thirst, that they were about to pass out. They sent a message to Rasulallah (asws) asking permission to break their Fast. In response, the Holy Prophet (asws) sent them a bowl and said: “Tell them to vomit into it what they have eaten.” One of them vomited and half filled the bowl with fresh blood and tender meat, while the other brought up the same so that they filled it between them.
Those who were looking they were shocked. Then the Holy Prophet (asws) said, “These two women have been Fasting from what Allah made halal to them, and have broken their Fast on what Allah had made haram to them. They sat together and were busy in backbiting, and here is the flesh of the people they were speaking bad about!” May Allah (swt) protect us from that kind of a Ramazan. We have to guard our tongues, yes. As murids, we have to guard our hearts. Look into our heart and guard it. Because the forbidden meat, when it just enters into our throat, we may take it out. But something that is forbidden that is going to enter into our heart, it’s going to be very difficult to take it out.
The Friend of Allah Hz. Sufyan al-Thawri (ra) is saying, a big friend of Allah, he said, ‘Backbiting, it cancels the fast.’ Our Sheykh, Sahib el-Sayf Sheykh Abdul Kerim el-Kibrisi el-Rabbani, he taught us the meaning of Ramazan. He taught us that Ramazan is the Sultan of the Months, and how to show respect to that Sultan. And he is saying in his Sohbet: Ramazan is going to complain about some people on the Judgment Day. Fasting is going to complain too. Eh, you should check, we should check ourselves to see where we are, what we did, to regret, to run back, ask forgiveness, try to catch up. Not too much to catch up but Allah’s mercy may reach. We don’t know anything. Anyone who is claiming to know something, they are the most ignorant ones. But Allah (swt) is telling us, `Run. If you did the mistake, turn around. Turn around and don’t be arrogant and stubborn like Sheytan.’ That’s what it is. If the person is carrying, as we said in the beginning of Ramazan, `Don’t fast only from eating, drinking and different activities. Fast from anger, fast from proudness, fast from arrogance, fast from stubbornness, fast from jealousy and envy. Fast from these things. Get rid of it.’ During the month of Ramazan it should become easier. To some it didn’t. That shows that you are supporting your ego. Sheytan is not there in the month of Ramazan. Sheytan is chained. That shows that you are a slave to your ego. You are not a servant to Allah (swt). You are a slave to the ego.
O Believers! That is the reality that is in front of us. Either we are going to pass through this Ramazan like believers and get the passport of Servant of Allah, or we are going to pass through the Month and to be called slave of sheytan and our ego. It depends on how we act during these Holy Days and Nights. And the way to purify our fasting, the way to complete and purify our fasting, it is to be in Jamaat and to put our heart into the Jamaat. This is the time when the name of Allah, Ya Jami, is being called by the friends of Allah. Because everything that is going to be done in the month of Ramazan, will be done in a jamaat, especially the murids, to come to eat the sahur in jamaat, to pray in jamaat, to make the zikr in jamaat, to fast in jamaat, to pray the tarawih prayer in jamaat. This is the month of Allah where we are going to complete each other.
During Ramazan, Hz. Abu Hurayra and other Sahabis they used to gather in the Masjid and they would say, ‘Let us purify our fast’ Because being in Jamaat, it makes the fasting clean. Helping other people, it makes the fasting clean. Feeding other people, taking care of other people, feeling the pain of other people, caring what is happening in their lives, it is going to make our fasting clean. If we are living for other people, if we are running to make the Jamaat stronger, if we are living to be in the Association of our Sheykh and be part of his work, that time insha’Allah, we will pass the Ramazan. But if we stay busy with our ego and our sheytan, definitely we will lose and we will be from the losers.
Hz. Hasan al-Basri (ra) is saying, ‘Indeed Allah has made Ramadan a way of getting ahead for His creation. They race to gain His pleasure through obedience to Him. Some will win the race, while others will be slow and remain back and lose. It is amazing to see a person playing and laughing on the Bayram that the good doers will be rewarded, and the wrong doers will be defeated.’
And Hz. Ali (kw) used to say on the Day of Eid: Where is the winner so that we may congratulate him, and where is the loser so that we may give him condolences. Oh winner, we congratulate you! Oh loser, may Allah give you ease in your time of disaster!
O Believers! If we lose in this Ramazan, it is a disaster for us. Let us make intention to spend these remaining days and nights of Shaban so that we can enter into Ramazan clean and pure. Let us make intention to spend our breath of life during Ramazan in that which is pleasing to our Lord, to our Prophet, to our Sheykh. Let us make intention to run away from everything that is displeasing to them, and to run away from our ego, from our sheytan, from the tricks and traps of dunya and our desires. Insha’Allah ar-Rahman, that time, on the Day of Eid, we will be counted amongst the winners. May Allah (swt) protect us from being counted from the losers. Amin.
