All praises are due to Allah, Lord of the Universes. O Living, O Self-Sustaining! O Originator of the heavens and the earth. O Lord of Majesty and Honor! There is no ilah but You. We seek help by Your mercy. We seek protection from Your punishment. O You who help those who ask for help! There is no god but You! By the honor of our master Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, give us support and show us mercy!

May the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you, People of the House. Allah is Praiseworthy, Glorious. And may all peace and blessings be upon our Master Muhammad (asws), the Owner of the Sword, the Owner of Good Manner, the Owner of the Flag, the Owner of Power, and the Owner of the Crown. And may all peace and blessings be upon his noble family and blessed companions, especially upon the Khulafa-e-Rashideen, Hz. Abu Bakr el-Siddiq, Hz. Umar el-Faruq, Hz. Osman el-Ghani, and Hz. Ali el-Murtaza, and all those who follow them until the Last Day.

Ayyuhal Mu’minoon! O Believers! Welcome to you on this Day of Jummah, the First Jummah of the Islamic Year of 1438. We are asking our Lord, Allah (swt), to make this year better than our last year. To forgive us for whatever we did wrong in the last year, and to accept whatever weak service we did in the last year. And to make this a year that we walk strongly in the Way of Hakk, stay with the People of Hakk, and stand up for Hakk no matter what.

O Believers. We are in the Sacred Month of Muharram. These days and nights are holy, and running to please our Lord Allah (swt) during this time is the work of the believers. Holy Prophet (asws) is saying in his Hadith Sherif: The best of fasts after the month of Ramazan are in the Month of Allah, which you call Muharram. And the best of prayer after the obligatory prayer is the night prayer. And inside this month is a Day that Allah (swt) has honored amongst the other days. Holy Prophet (asws) is saying: If you want to fast a month after Ramazan, then fast Muharram, for it has a day in which Allah forgave an entire people, and He accepts the repentance of others.

O Believers! That special day, as we have been taught by our Sheykh, it is the Day of Ashura. And in a few days, we will reach to Yawm al-Ashura. What is this Day? Ghawth al-Azam, the arch intercessor, Sheykh Abdul Qadir el-Gilani (ks) is transmitting the Hadith from Holy Prophet (asws) about Ashura saying: If someone fasts on the day of Ashura in Muharram, he will be granted the spiritual reward of ten thousand angels. If someone provides a believer with a meal to break his fast on the night of Ashura, it will be just as if the entire community of Sayyidina Muhammad (asws) had broken fast as his guests, and had filled their stomachs to capacity. “O Messenger of Allah”, his listeners exclaimed, ‘ it would seem that Allah (swt) has given preference to the day of Ashura over all the other days!’ “Yes,” Alaihi salatu wa salam said, as he went on to explain: Allah (swt) created the heavens on the day of Ashura. He created the mountains on the day of ‘Ashura. He created the oceans on the day of Ashura. He created the Pen on the day of Ashura. He created the Tablet on the day of Ashura. He created Adam (as) on the day of Ashura, and He caused him to enter the Garden of Paradise on the day of Ashura. Ibraham (asws) was born on the day of Ashura, and Allah (swt) delivered him from the fiery furnace on the day of Ashura, then He rescued his son from being sacrificed on the day of Ashura. He caused Firaun to drown on the day of Ashura. Allah (swt) relieved Ayyub (as) of his trials and tribulations on the day of Ashura. Allah (swt) relented toward Adam (as) on the day of Ashura. Allah (swt) forgave Dawud (as) on the day of Ashura. Isa (as) was born on the day of Ashura. The Day of Resurrection will occur on the day of Ashura. And as Seyh Efendi is teaching us, the Ship of Nuh (as) reached safety in the Day of Ashura. And the Beloved Grandson of Holy Prophet (as), Hz. Huseyin (ra), reached Shahadat (martyrdom) on the Day of Ashura in the field of Karbala.

O Believers. That is the day that we are entering into. A day that Allah (swt) has chosen from generation to generation, throughout the history of this world, to display His Majesty and His Mercy to Creation. So how should we spend this day?

Yes, we should spend the Day in Fasting. Holy Prophet (asws) is saying to fast the Day of Ashura, and to also fast one day together with it. That is the physical action that we should do on Ashura. Yes, we should feed people in Ashura. We should help people in Ashura. We should be kind to the orphans on the day of Ashura. We should be generous on the Day of Ashura. These are the outward actions that we should be doing on Ashura; they are important and we must be running after them. But what should be happening in our heart on the Day of Ashura? What should be in our tafakkur on the Day of Ashura? What should be happening inside of us on Ashura that is going to make us change and to become better?

In the Muslim world today, there are two sides. There are some that are saying, eh, today is Ashura. Doesn’t matter. Just another day. We aren’t going to make any special actions. We aren’t going to make any special recognition of this day. Holy days they are innovation, they are biddat. Holy days and Holy months are biddat. Holy times are biddat. Anything that is going to make us reach to safety is biddat. And so with their evil attitude, with that Wahhabi attitude, they lose all the special times that Allah (swt) has sent, and they lose out on the blessings and their hearts became hard as stone. May Allah (swt) protect us from the fitne.

On the other side, there are those that are going to beat themselves and cry and scream for Hz. Huseyin. This used to be only on the side of those who call themselves the Shias. But now we find that Sunnis became jealous of this so-called tradition, and they are copying. They are going to stay up all night to read the story of what happened in Karbala. They are going to whip up the emotions in the people until they become wild, telling them about the suffering of Hz. Huseyin and his family. Then they are going to recite some chanting that is going to make them lose themselves, they are going to hit themselves, they are going to make their blood come out. They are going to scream, ‘Ya Huseyin, Labbayk Ya Huseyin.’ And then the next day, after Ashura is finished, back to their normal lives. Back to being disobedient creatures to the Lord of the Universes.

That is the tradition of the traitors in the Camp of Hz. Huseyin in Karbala. They stayed up all night. They cried all night. They said, ‘Ya Huseyin, Labbayk ya Huseyin.’ They said, ‘we will never leave you Ya Huseyin.’ But the light of morning came, and they were nowhere to be seen. In the night time, when things are dark and unclear, it looked like there were so many of them. But in the light of the day their reality was exposed, and they disappeared when the time of test came.

Hazret Hussain (r.a)

Seyh Efendi is describing to us what is happening. When Seyh Efendi describes what is happening, he is not reading it from a book. He is saying it as a Grandson of Hz. Huseyin, who knows that history, who has seen the incident of Karbala. He is saying: That night before the Battle, Hz. Huseyin spoke to the people around him. It was dark, there was no moon. He said to them, “You all came here with me. I know. So many of you want to leave. So many of you were thinking that Yazid is just bluffing. But he is not. By tomorrow noontime, we may not be here. So many of you is around me because you are waiting for me to be Khalifah, and for you to have the dunya. The door is open to you. I will not complain about you on the judgment day, that you left me alone. I know after all this, after this many days, you are feeling shy to leave. But you really don’t want to be here.”

He said to them, “There is no moon tonight. I am going inside my tent. By Fajr prayer, you can leave, every one of you, in that darkness. I will never complain about you.” They screamed, “Ya Huseyin, our lives is sacrifice for you, ya Huseyin.” He entered to his room. When Fajr entered, he came out, he found only his family and a couple of people around him. The rest all left.

O Murids! What should be happening in our heart on the Day of Ashura? We should check to see of that disease in our heart. Not whether we have the disease of betrayal or not.We do. We all have it in our hearts. but to check that and we must see that that disease is not going to overtake and overpower us. and we must take the correct medicine and the cure to cure that disease from our heart. We must see, who is my Huseyin, and am I being loyal to him? Who was left in Karbala? Just a handful of Hz. Huseyin’s family members. What did they do? They went and fought one by one against the entire army of Yezid until they were martyred, to protect their Huseyin. To protect their Sheykh. They knew what was going to happen to them. They did not think that they were going to be saved. They knew when they rode on their horse toward the enemy that they are going to be martyred, but their heart was saying, my life is for my Huseyin.

It is so easy to say with the tongue, ya Rabbi, I am a Huseyni. Ya Rabbi, I am not a yezidi. So easy to say with a tongue. But the Real Ones, they do not speak with the tongue. Their actions speak. Because the language of the heart, it is action. So we have to ask ourselves; how am I being toward my Huseyin? Did I betray my Efendi? And the reality is this: Any time that our Sheykh called for us and we did not come, we betrayed. Any time we disobeyed an order of our Sheykh, we betrayed. Any time that our heart was saying, ‘I don’t like what he’s saying, I don’t like how he washes me up, why is he being so mean to me,’ we betrayed. So that disease of betrayal, that is coming from the ego, it is hiding inside each and every one of us. And our job in the Day of Ashura, it is to go down and beg our Lord Allah (swt) to take that betrayal out of us. If you want to cry, cry for your disobedience. If you want to cry, cry for that disease of betrayal to come out. If you want to cry, cry to beg your Lord to never become a traitor. Cry that you see what is that betrayal that is inside and to get rid of it. Yes, that time, that time it is showing Respect to the Day of Ashura.

The action of Hz. Huseyin in Karbala, it is a Message to all the People of Truth, from that time to eternity. And that Message is this: Stand up for the Truth, no matter what. Stand up for the Truth, even if it means sacrificing everything that you love. Stand up for the Truth, even if it means sacrificing your dunya. Stand up for the Truth, even if the price is our life.

And for everyone there is a test that comes. Canakkale, it was another Karbala. Seyh Efendi’s grandparents, in Cyprus, they went through a Karbala, where they gave their life. That test is going to come to each of us. On this day, we have to ask ourselves: how am I going to be when that day comes?

Seyh Efendi is making it clear saying: All these people, they did all these, just because of one thing, saying, ‘we are holding on tightly to our faith.’ And because they stand that so strongly, they give their life, Islam reached to us today. So how much are we supposed to be appreciating that? And how much are we supposed to be understanding the value? They gave their life, they gave their wealth, they gave their health, they gave everything that they had. Everything they have, they give. And last, what is most beloved to a man? His life. They gave their life.Where are we?

Yes, we must sit and we must think. It is easy for us to say, ‘we are Ottomans.’ We are not living like Ottomans too. We must run, we must hold on tightly. Every single day, we must force ourselves little bit more, little bit more. Don’t worry. More you are forcing yourself, you are not getting more weaker, you are just getting  stronger. More you are forcing, Allah (swt) sending more energy, more power to you.

If you are taking this, blessings to you and to all those. If not, as you like. Blessings to you  and to me and to everyone and all those ones, that they sacrifice their life and all those, that they are right now in  some part, some way,  some parts of this world, that they are getting ready to sacrifice their life. Some of them, they have got fooled by some wrong idea people, but they are still sincere in the way of their faith, so we are praying for them too that Allah (swt) sends the Sahib Zaman, Mahdi (as). Insha’AllahurRahman, that we will hold on tightly to him and to come to safety.

O Believers. We should spend Ashura in the Way of the Evliya, in the Way of our Ottoman grandfathers. We should spend this Day of Ashura to prepare ourselves for the Days that are coming, and make a promise to never betray. Amin.
