All praises are due to Allah, Lord of the Universes. O Allah! Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Great Throne, our Lord and the Lord of everything, and the One Who sent the Tawraat, the Injeel, the Zabur and the Great Qur’an. O Allah! You are The First so there is nothing that came before You, and You are The Last so there is nothing that comes after You, and You are The Manifest with nothing above You, and You are The Hidden with nothing below You. All praise belongs to You. (Ghawth al-Azam Sheykh Abdul Qadir Gilani).
And may all peace and blessings be upon the one taught by Allah, the Leader of the Pious, the One Beautified by Allah, the Best of Allah’s creation, the Light of the Throne of Allah (AS), Sayyidina Muhammad (AS), and upon his noble family and blessed companions- Especially upon the Four Khulafa-e-Rashideen, Hz. Abu Bakr el-Siddiq, Hz. Umar el-Faruq, Hz. Osman el-Ghani, and Hz. Ali el-Murtaza, and all those who follow them until the Last Day.
O Believers! Welcome to you on this Holy Day of Jummah, the Second Jummah of the Month of Rabiul Awwal. Welcome to you as we are a few days away from celebrating the Mevlid-i-Serif of our Holy Prophet (AS). Allahumma Salli Ala Sayyidina Muhammadin wa ala alihi wa sahbihi wa sallim.
Ya Ayyuhal Mu’minoon! O Believers! In this Mawlid, the commemorations of the birth of the Prophet (AS), we are seeking to honor the Holy Prophet (AS), because he is the one that has been honored by Allah (SWT). Imam Qastalani, the famous commentator of the Sahih Bukhari, is recording a Hadith coming from Hz. Salman Farisi which says: Jibril (AS) descended on the Holy Prophet (AS) and said, ‘Your Lord says, ‘If I have taken Abraham as a beloved, intimate friend, I have taken you for the same. I have never created any creation more precious to Me than you, and I have created this world and its inhabitants for the purpose of letting them know your honor and what you mean to Me; and if it were not for you I would not have created the universes.’
So the universes are created for the Holy Prophet (AS). And our reason of creation is to know the Honor of the Holy Prophet (AS). Because, in reality, our existence is coming from that Holy Prophet. In the Holy Quran, Allah (SWT) is saying in Surah Ma’idah: BismillahirRahmanirRahim: Indeed there has come to you from Allah a Light. (5:15). Holy Prophet (AS) is explaining what the reality of that light is in his Hadith Sherif. Jābir ibn ‘Abd Allāh (RA) said to the Holy Prophet (AS), “O Messenger of Allāh, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, tell me of the first thing Allāh created before all things.” He said: Ya Jābir, the first thing Allāh created was the light of your Prophet from His light, and that light remained in the midst of His Power for as long as He wished.
And there was not, at that time, a Tablet or a Pen or a Paradise or a Fire or an angel or a heaven or an earth. And when Allah wished to create creation, he divided that Light into four parts and from the first made the Pen, from the second the Tablet, from the third the Throne, then He divided the fourth into four parts [and from them created everything else].
O Believers! The Mevlid-i-Nebi, the commemoration of the birth of the Prophet (AS), it is to honor the appearance of that Sacred Light into this world. It is to honor and thank Allah (SWT) that He sent His Most Beloved into this world as the Mercy to the Universes, as a Guide to the Straight Path. And for 1400 years, the Muslims were showing their Shukr for the Gift of the Holy Prophet (AS). The great Muslim explorer, Ibn Battuta, is recording the events that used to happen in the Haram e-sheriff, saying: On the Mawlid of the Prophet (AS), the door of the Kaba is opened by the head of the Banu Shayba, the doorkeepers of the Kaba, and that on the Mawlid, the Shafi’I Qadi of Makkah, distributes food to the Grandchildren of the Prophet (AS) and to all the other people of Makkah.
Each year on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal, after the evening prayer, the four Qadis of Makkah (representing the four Sunni Schools) and large groups of people including the scholars and noblemen of Mecca, Shaykhs, Murshids and Murids, judges), and scholars leave the Masjid and set out collectively for a visit to the birthplace of the Prophet (AS), shouting out Zikrullah. The houses on the route are illuminated with numerous lanterns and large candles, and a great many people are out and about. They all wear special clothes and they take their children with them. Having reached the birthplace, inside a special sermon for the occasion of the birthday of the Prophet (AS) is delivered, mentioning the miracles that took place on that occasion.
This is the tradition that we are trying to keep, as taught to us by our Sheykh. We are keeping the tradition as established by the Ottoman Sultans, who made the Mevlid an Imperial Celebration.
Today, we find that many Muslims are trying to celebrate the Mawlid. 5-10 year ago, it was very few who were trying to honor the Mawlid. But now we see that there is a trend within the Muslim world of people who want to become “Sufis.” And so they are running to make big Mawlid celebrations. But the Mawlids that they are making, they are not the kind that are being described by Ibn Battuta. They are not the kind that were done in the Ottoman Empire. They are a modern, mega-church, superficial Mawlid. They are holding the Mawlids in soccer stadiums and arenas, where on other days they have rock concerts and shows. And they are putting so much theater into it, making the lighting and the atmosphere so that it is making people very emotional. They are having singers come and perform Naats and Nasheeds designed to make people cry and lose themselves. There are so-called Sheykhs who give speeches about “love of Prophet, Aashiq-e-Rasul, Hubb-un-Nabi,” until the people think they are reaching to a spiritual state of listening. And then, the lights turn off, the stadium closes for the night, and everyone goes back home to their own selfish and egoistic lifestyle, that is different from the lifestyle of the Prophet. So nothing has change. We feel good for one night, we pay lip service to the Love of the Prophet, and then we go back to our old ways. Is that Mawlid?
Mawlid is meant to transform you. Because the Mawlid is a night that comes with Power. And in a True Association based on Hakk, in a Mawlid that is led by a Friend of Allah, that Friend of Allah is going to wake you up and say: what is the proof of your Love to that Messenger? You are claiming that you are loving the Prophet? Where is your proof? Because love, it is not to recite poetry and to listen to speeches and to cry and to rip your clothes and not change. Love is to change. Love is to change your lower self for a higher self. Love is to sacrifice everything for your beloved. Love is to see how you can serve your beloved. And that is the reality of the Love of the Holy Prophet (AS). When the Sahaba-e-Kiram, when they were declaring their Love for the Prophet, they weren’t saying, “I love you ya Rasulallah” and then they were going home. Never. They said, ya Rasulallah, I love you- here are my beloved ones. Here is my wealth. Here is my life. It is all sacrificed to you. Their love drove them to the outskirts of Mecca to suffer in the ban during the year of sadness. Their love led them to leave their ancestral homeland of Mecca and go to Medine. Their love led them to great torture and oppression in the years of staying in Mecca.Their love let them to Badr armed only with sticks and stones against the people who want to wipe them out.Their love led them to Central Asia and China and India to spread the message of Islam without speaking the language or knowing the people. Their love transformed them. That is the love we are looking for in the Mawlid.
Love, in Islam, is not a word. Love is action. And the Love of Allah and His Prophet, it shakes the world. The Sahaba-e-Kiram, the companions of the Prophet, with that love, they spread Islam to the whole world. The Ottomans, with that love, they ruled the world with Justice and kept everything in order and gave everyone their rights, Musims and non-Muslims, believers and unbelievers, people of every race and every ethnicity. We must look for that love, we must look for justice. And in this time, a person who has that love, he cannot be happy with the state of this world, with the state of oppression and cruelty and injustice in this world. And that love must awaken the passion in his heart to want to change.
As our Sheykh, Sahib el-Sayf Sheykh Abdul Kerim el-Kibrisi el-Rabbani (KS) is saying: The love of Allah and love of His Prophet is giving energy to you. It’s giving to you that you wake up, you say, okay now I got this to do, I got one more step to make today, I have to go one more step ahead. It doesn’t matter, I’m going to conquer this world or not. This is what your aim supposed to be. I’m going to conquer the world. I may not reach. It’s okay. I did my step. The people who’s going to come and is going to conquer one day they going to write you in that book saying this one was aiming there too, put him in that book too. and the aim is to bring justice to the world, and the aim is to bring down the oppression that everyone can see that is happening.
O Believers! In these days of Mawlid, we should renew our intention. We have to renew our intention and our promise to give ourselves to the Way of Allah, to the way of the Prophet, of our Sheykh, to the way of justice, to the way of love, to the way of compassion and kindness.Just like in the time of Holy Prophet (AS), the world was filled with darkness. And he came as Light, and the darkness disappeared. There are still those who are carrying that Light. And this darkness, it is going to disappear.
Hz. Muhammad Mehdi (AS) is coming to bring Light to this world. We are the nominees to be from his helpers. In these days of Mawlid, we should pray to reach to that. As our Sheykh is saying, We must be the nominees to say, “We are the nominees, Ya Rabbi, trying to hold this very high. We are knowing our power that we have no power. We are very weak ones, very weak servants. We are asking support from You. If support is coming from You to us then we are the most strong ones. And don’t let us to deviate from the Sirat-ul Mustaqim.
Because Mehdi (AS), he is going to look for the best ones. This Way, this Tarikat, it is to train us to be from that group. As Mevlana Jelaleddin Rumi (KS) is saying: In the slaughterhouse of love, they kill only the best, none of the weak or deformed. Don’t run away from this dying. Whoever’s not killed for love is dead meat. Insha’AllahurRahman, in these holy days and nights, our Lord will write for us to be amongst that blessed group. May these days be blessed for us.
Let us say Amin to the dua of our Grandsheykh, Sultan el-Evliya Sheykh Mevlana Muhammad Nazim Adil el-Hakkani (KS): May it be holy for the people of Muhammad. May Allah let us reach his intercession. May no worries remain on all people. May sheytan and those who follow sheytan be defeated. May calamities stop. May mercies come down on the people of Muhammad. May relief come. May those who want to destroy the people of Muhammad be destroyed themselves. Amin.
