In the earlier times, what are they most attached to? What they possessed. Especially livestock, it is the most important thing. What else? Things that you have to give up, the zakat, gold, whatever your heart is being pulled to, He’s saying, ‘to know that if you put these things that I gave to you into your heart, you are going to lose Me, and you are going to lose understanding that I am the Lord of generosity and I am the Lord of compassion, and when you lose Me as the Lord of compassion and generosity, you look to yourselves as Lord, but you will become the biggest tyrants in this world because you want to fill up your heart with that which is not meant to be in there, and your heart cannot be satisfied with anything.’
So if you think that your heart can be satisfied with gold, as much gold as you put, your heart will still not be satisfied, if this whole world turns into a gold, you are still not satisfied. Because the heart can only be satisfied with Allah. But Allah swt is asking for the sacrifice, and looking at how the Holy Prophet (asws) lived, at how his companions lived, they did not attain to those high stations if they did not go through the tests that they went through. And they went through not one or two, these days when we go through certain difficulties that we make to ourselves; we think it is Divine test. It is not Divine test. If we look at the Holy Prophet (asws) and the companions, if we look at the Evliyaullah who lived their lives before and what they sacrificed, we are going to say they are crazy. How can you have faith like that? And when they look at our faith, they are going to say we are unbelievers.
If we don’t want to be called unbelievers by them, it is important that we look to them as our role model. We look to them meaning whatever that they are aiming for, we must put our heart to that, whatever that they are desiring, we must put our heart to that. How they live their lives, their attitude, we must put our hearts to that. It is not just wearing clothes that they are wearing or walking right or left foot first, it is looking to see what is in their hearts. What do they have in their heart? Allah. And how is that shown? It shows when they say everything that you have, everything that you own, as the Ayat is saying, ‘inna salati wa nusuki wa mahyaya wa mamati lillahi rabbil aalamin.’ Everything that you have, our Salah, don’t think we are praying for ourselves. Our Salah, our worship, our life and our death it is only for Allah swt.
So Allah swt, He is not asking from this nation a sacrifice of blood or even of things of this dunya. What He is looking for, what sacrifice is He looking for? Is He in need of that? No. He is not in need. Allah swt is beyond all need. But He is saying ‘these are the things that are in front of you that unless you remove them, unless you sacrifice in My way; don’t remove them in order to get something else other than Me,’ because you may sacrifice your ego, but you may sacrifice your ego, for instance, to get more power from the other Alams, to get supernatural power. Allah is the Lord of Mercy and the Lord of Compassion and the Lord of Generosity. You’re an unbeliever; you are stepping on your ego. You will get the rewards of that. You are stepping on your ego to do what? To be able to fly in the air, to show to other people you have special powers? Allah will give you that. But the ego is not to be sacrificed for that low level kind of rewards. The ego is to be sacrificed so that you can return to your Lord.
We are going to enter into the Night of Miraj. What is that Buraq that that the Holy Prophet (asws) was riding? Like our Sheykh, SahibulSaif Sheykh Abdul Kerim al-Kibrisi al-Rabbani is saying, ‘that Buraq, that animal, that is your ego. If you are able to sacrifice your ego, you will ride on it and with the power that your ego has, you will be able to make that Miraj.’ If you cannot do that, our return is to Allah. We will return to Allah, one way or another. But it’s going to be a very hard, a very dishonorable return to Allah swt. So the Prophets they came to show us, ‘this is the way, this is how you put your ego down.
Look at the events that are surrounding the Holy Prophet (asws). Murids are not happy. They are living here one year, two years, couple of things happening and they say, ‘hey, what is this? This is Tarikat, I’m not getting anything.’ Because your head is in your clouds and you are thinking, you are reading couple of books here and here, which Sheykh Effendi also forbids, and you are thinking it must be like that. But you are not reading what the Holy Prophet (asws) went through with the Sahabi e-Kiram. They went through ten, twelve, thirteen years in Mecca. They were not flying in the air. They were not witnessing and conducting things that people are going to be so excited about. Of course, Holy Prophet (asws) he was displaying so much mujizat. But more than that, every single one of them they went through such severe hardship for thirteen years.
They are seeing their own wealth disappearing. They are seeing their own reputation held by the community disappearing. They are seeing their friends disappearing. They are seeing their families disappearing. They are seeing their father, their mother, their children, dying, finishing. And Holy Prophet (asws) is just telling them ‘be patient. Be patient.’ And although they witnessed so much miracles from the Prophet (asws) and they know that the one who can split the moon, you think he cannot split the unbelievers? But he didn’t do anything because he’s teaching them, what? Connection, to hold on strongly, obedience, faith. Especially in the first thirteen years, to say ‘Allah is not giving us permission to even put our hands up to fight them, those ones who are tyrannizing us. Put your hands down.’ This is second Jahiliyya. The real believers, when you look at the first Jahiliyya, you will understand, we will take energy and we will take blessings from what they went through. And you think just by thinking about them, that they are not going to be there, thinking about us?
If Allah swt is saying ‘remember Me and I will remember you,’ do you think that when we remember the Sahabi e-Kiram they are not remembering us? You think the way that we remember them is the same way that they remember us? When we are going through the difficulties and the hardship, individually or as a community, and we are remembering Hazreti Bilal (ra), we are remembering Hazreti Hamza (ra), we are remembering all the other great Sahabis, we are remembering Hazreti Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (ra) and all those other ones that suffered, do you think when we remember and we take lesson from it, that we are connecting ourselves to them, they are not giving their Himmet to us? They are. And we need especially their Himmet in these days, in this situation. Because this is the second Jahiliyya, to understand how to work and live and move in this second Jahiliyya we have to look in the first Jahiliyya, how they lived, and to take lesson from that. Then slowly we say, ‘Allah Allah, I thought I was sacrificing. Look what they went through. Alhamdulillah, it’s teaching me not to complain. But, alhamdulillah, it is still difficult for me, I’m still understanding that this is difficult, this is,’ and we are not asking Allah swt to test us. It is still difficult, but you are not looking at your difficulty as something that is dishonorable. You are looking at that difficulty that it’s coming from a place of honor, because these are the ones Allah swt has honored. And silently, because we believe in them, and we believe that they’re able to help us, we ask for their help. And slowly they will be able to help.
Just as the Murids they are around the Sheykh, the Sahabi e-Kiram they are around the Holy Prophet (asws). So how many times you heard Sheykh Effendi saying ‘you must know the history of the Prophet (asws), you must know the seerah, you must learn,’? How many of us are taking those words seriously? How many of us went through studying dunya things for years? If you want to get a license, you study, even if it’s a few weeks or months, you study to get that license, whatever it is that you are studying. Real estate or whatever. Why are you not studying that life of the Holy Prophet (asws) and to take lesson? To sit, to understand, to speak, to ask. That is a whole universe that is there, whole universe filled with treasures that is just waiting to open to look and to take, to put lessons into our lives.
So understanding now the seerah it is important because their history is our history. And we must make our history to be part of their history. That is the time our lives Is not going to be wasted. We are not just part of a history of a post-modern world that we are living in right now. We are part of that sacred history. When you are going to learn? And how many times we heard Sheykh Effendi saying ‘choose just one Sahabi.’ There are 124,000 Sahabis. Choose just one, to say that ‘I have more familiarity to this one. My heart is pulling to this one,’ take that one and learn and study about him. Find out. For men and for women. You are going to be raised with the ones that you love. So many people, on the day of Judgment, they are going to be raised with their nafs and with their sheytans, because that is what they love. We are in this association; we should not be busy with the dunya. We should be busy with the Akhirat. Find out because we want to be raised with those ones who love Allah. And Allah swt is saying, ‘do you think that you are going to reach to their stations without any of the tests?’
Maybe you don’t understand what you are going through, why is it so difficult. But by just studying them a little bit, you understand a little bit, it gives meaning to you and it puts your history together with their history. And when you start doing that, you will feel faith slowly entering into your heart. Insya’Allah ar-Rahman, we are coming to the night of Miraj, we are hoping to be the dust under the feet of our Sheykh, who is going to be with the Holy Prophet (asws). Insya’Allah ar-Rahman, we will hold these nights and these days high and we will not waste them and put them down. May Allah make our hearts to turn more to Akhirat and to turn less to this dunya, may Allah swt open this way, the dunya and the Akhirat to be easy for us, for us to concentrate on our Sheykh, on our Prophet and our Lord Allah swt. Wa min Allahu Taufiq, al Fatiha. Amin. Selam Aleykum wa Rahmatullah.
