All praises are due to Allah, Lord of the Universes. All praises are due to Allah Who says in the Holy Kuran: “O you who believe! Fear Allah as He deserves to be feared, and do not die except in a state of Islam. And hold firmly, all together, to the Rope of Allah, and do not separate. And remember Allah’s favor on you- how you were enemies and he made friendship between your hearts so that you became brothers by His Favor. And you were on the edge of a Pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make His signs clear to you, so that you might be guided. Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is evil- they are the ones who will be successful. And do not be like the ones who became divided amongst themselves and fell into disagreements after receiving Clear Signs- for them is an awful doom.” (3:102-106).
May all peace and blessings be upon our Master Sayyidina Muhammad. O Allah, send blessings upon our Master Muhammad and the Family of our Master Muhammad, as you have sent blessings upon the family of our Master Ibrahim and the Family of our Master Ibrahim- verily You are the Praiseworthy, the Glorious. O Allah, send peace upon our Master Muhammad, and the Family of our Master Muhammad, as you have sent peace upon the family of our Master Ibrahim and the Family of our Master Ibrahim- verily You are the Praiseworthy, the Glorious. (Salatul Ibrahimiyya).
May peace and blessings be upon the Noble Ahlul Bayt and upon the Blessed Sahaba-e-Kiram, especially upon the Four Khulafa-e-Rashideen, Hz. Abu Bakr el-Siddiq, Hz. Umar el-Faruq, Hz. Osman el-Ghani, and Hz. Ali el-Murtaza, and all those who follow them until the Last Day.
Ya Ayyuhal Mu’minoon! O Believers! Allah (SWT) has created us to know Him and to worship Him. And Allah (SWT) has created angels who record every action that we do. He says, BismillahirRahmanirRahim. “Indeed, there are above you guardians, Kind and Honorable- writing down your deeds. They know and understand all that you do.” Sadaqallahuladzim (82:10-12).
And those angels, Kiraman Katibeen, they are writing down whatever we are doing in a book. And that book is going to be given to us on that Judgment Day. Allah (SWT) is saying, BismillahirRahmanirRahim, “O you Insaan ( O mankind)! Indeed, you are always working toward your Lord- painfully working- but you will meet Him. Then He who is given his Record in his right hand,
He will be judged with an easy accounting, and will turn to his people rejoicing. But (the one) who is given his Record behind his back- he will cry out from destruction and be thrown to a scorching fire. Indeed he had (before) been among his people in happiness- truly, did he think that he would not have to return (to Us)? No, no! For his Lord was (ever) watchful of him.” Sadaqallahuladzim (84:6-14).
O mankind! Ya Bani Adam! What have you done in your life! What are we bringing to that Meydan-i-Mahsher, to that gathering place of the Day of Judgment. What are we bringing? What are the angels writing in our record day by day, minute by minute, breath by breath, thought by thought. “They know and understand all that you do.” Sadaqallahuladzim. What will we do when we meet Allah (SWT), as Holy Prophet (AS) said, with “no veil” and “no translator.” (Bukhari). What will we do on the day that even the Ulul Azam Prophets will fear from Allah, saying, “Today my Lord is Angry- He has never been this Angry before, and He will never be this Angry again.” (Bukhari).
Believers! How is it possible to think about that Day without shaking from the fear of Allah. If the remembrance of our death, the remembrance of the grave, the remembrance of Judgment Day, if the remembrance of the Sirat, if the remembrance of hellfire, if these don’t make a man to tremble from the fear of Allah, then that man’s heart is already dead. May Allah (SWT) protect us from the dead heart. Holy Prophet (AS) said: “Do not speak much without mentioning Allah, for too much speech without remembering Allah will harden the heart. Verily, the furthest of the people from Allah is one with a hard heart.” (Tirmidhi).
We want our hearts to be soft. We want our hearts to be alive. Look at those ones, take lessons from them. Understand those ones whose hearts are alive and they are soft. Look at the Prophets, look at the angels, look at the Sahaba, look at the Evliyaullah. Those are the ones with the alive, pure, golden hearts. And all of their hearts were trembling from fear of Allah, and all of their eyes were wet with the crying out of fear of Allah.
One of the Sahaba-e-Kiram is saying that he came to visit Holy Prophet (AS). He came while he was praying. That Sahabi is saying, “he (AS) was crying and sobbing and his chest sounded like a boiling kettle.” (Abu Dawud). Hz. Abdullah ibn Masud (RA) is saying that once Holy Prophet (AS) came to him and said, “Read the Kuran to me.” Hz. Ibn Masud said, “How can I read it to you when it was revealed to you yourself, ya Rasulallah!” And Holy Prophet said, “I like to hear it recited by someone else.” So Hz. Ibn Masud started reading, and when he reached the ayat, BismillahirRahmanirRahim.“So how will it be when We bring from every nation a witness, and We bring you, ya Muhammad, against these people as a witness” Sadaqallahuladzim (4:41). And Hz. Ibn Masud said that he saw Holy Prophet (AS) crying when he heard this ayat. (Bukhari).
The Angels they were crying from Fear of Allah. The Chief of the Angels, Hz. Jibril (AS), is crying from Fear of Allah. Holy Prophet (AS) said, “On the night of MirIaj, I saw Jibril looking like a worn-out rag from the fear of Allah.” (Ahmad). And once Holy Prophet (AS) asked him, Ya Jibril, what makes you cry? And Hz. Jibril said, “My eyes have not been dry since Allah created hell-fire, out of fear that I would disobey Him and He would throw me in it.” (Bayhaqi). Listen to the words! He is saying, ‘I am scared that I might disobey Allah.’ Hz Insan, mankind, we who know how much we have disobeyed Allah, what is our fear? Where is our fear?
Adam (AS) cried when he was thrown out of Paradise. Nuh (AS) cried because of the dua he made which led to the end of his nation. Hz. Yahya (AS) cried so much that he had lines running down from his eyes. Once, Hz. Zakariyya did not see Hz. Yahya for three days, and he found him crying inside a grave he had dug for himself. When Hz. Zakariyya asked him what he was doing he said, “O my father, didn’t you tell me that there is a small distance between Paradise and Hell, and that it will not be crossed except with the tears of those who cry?” And Hz. Zakariyya said, “Cry my son, cry.” And these two Prophets of Allah cried together. (Ibn Mubarak).
The Sahaba-e-Kiram, they shook and cried from the Fear of Allah. The Ashara Mubashara, the ones who were promised paradise while they were alive, they cried from fear of Allah. Hz. Abu Bakr el-Siddiq cried so much that he could not complete his prayer. Hz. Umar would become sick from fear when he would hear the words of the Kuran. Hz. Osman el-Ghani said, “I wish that I wouldn’t be raised for Judgment after I died.” Hz. Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (RA) said, “I wish I was a ram for my family to slaughter, and eat my meat, and drink my broth.” The Sahaba-e-Kiram, they had Fear of Allah, and they had Fear of the Prophet. Their Fear was so much that they died out of shame and out of fear.
One young Sahabi named Hz. Tha’labah, he was from the Ansaar, and he used to do Hizmet, running to serve the Holy Prophet (AS). Once he was walking and he saw a woman making ghusl, and he looked at her. As soon as he realized his mistake, he became terrified that Allah (SWT) was going to send an ayat about him, so he left Madinah and ran to the mountains. He was missing for 40 days, and Holy Prophet (AS) was looking for him, but nobody knew where he was. Jibril (AS) came and said, “Ya Muhammad (AS), your Lord says salaam to you and says: A young man from your Ummah has ran to the mountains, seeking refuge with Me from My Fire.”
So Holy Prophet (AS) sent Hz. Umar and Hz. Salman to find Hz. Tha’labah. And they went to the mountains, and one of the shepherds said, “Are you looking for the young man who is running away from hellfire?”
So Hz. Umar said, ‘how do you know that?’
The shepherd said, “Because in the middle of the night he came out from the mountain with his hand on his head, saying, “I wish You (ya Rabbi) would take my soul as You took other souls, and my body as You took other bodies, and don’t expose and humiliate me on Judgment Day.”
And Hz. Umar looked for Hz. Tha’labah and found him in the middle of the night, walking around saying these words. Hz. Umar hugged Hz. Tha’labah who said, “I want to be safe from the Fire. Ya Umar, does Rasulallah know my sin?”
And Hz. Umar replied, “All I know is that he remembered you yesterday, and Holy Prophet was crying for you.”
And Hz. Tha’labah said, “Ya Umar, promise me that you won’t let me see the Prophet except when he is praying, and Hz. Bilal is saying the Iqamah.”
And Hz. Umar promised. When they reached Madinah, Holy Propeht (AS) was praying Fajr. When Hz. Tha’labah heard Holy Prophet’s recitation, he passed out. After giving the salaam for Namaz, Holy Prophet said, “Ya Umar, ya Salman, what happened to Tha’labah?” And they pointed to Hz. Tha’labah.
Holy Prophet (AS) stood up and said, “Ya Tha’labah!”
And the young Sahabi said, “I am here, ya Rasulallah!”
Holy Prophet (AS) asked him, “What kept you away from me?”
He answered, “my sin, ya Rasulallah.”
Holy Prophet (AS) said, “let me tell you an ayat that will erase sins- “Ya Allah, give us in this world what is good, and in Ahiret what is good, and save us from the punishment of the fire” (2:201).”
Hz. Tha’labah said, “My sin is too big, ya Rasulallah.”
Holy Prophet (AS) said, “No, the Word of Allah is greater.” And Holy Prophet (AS) told the young Sahabi to go home. Hz. Tha’labah went home and he became sick for eight days. And on the eighth day, Holy Prophet (AS) visited him with Hz. Salman. And when they came in the room, Holy Prophet (AS) tried to put Hz. Tha’labah’s head in his lap, but Hz. Tha’labah pulled away. Holy Prophet (AS) said, “why are you taking your head away from my lap.”
And he replied, “Because it is too full of sins.”
Holy Prophet (AS) said, “what are you feeling?”
He replied, “I feel something like ants are crawling between my skins and my bones.”
Holy Prophet (AS) asked, “what do you wish for?”
He replied, “I wish for the forgiveness of my Lord.”
Jibril (AS) came at that moment and said, “Ya Rasulallah, Allah is giving you Salam and saying: “If this Servant of Mine were to meet me with sins as big as the whole world, I would meet him with as much forgiveness.”
When the Holy Prophet told Hz. Tha’labah what Jibril had said. Hz. Tha’labah, when he heard this, he cried out, and he died.
When Holy Prophet (AS) went to pray the Janazah prayer for him, the Prophet (AS) he was walking up on his toes. The Sahabas asked the reason, and Holy Prophet (AS) said, “By the One who sent me with Hakk as a Prophet, I could not put my feet on the ground because of how many wings were around from the angels who came down to walk with his janazah.” (Hilyat al-Awliya).
O Believers! Hz. Tha’labah was in the service of Holy Prophet (AS). His fear was from his faith. His fear was from his shame. His fear was from his love of Allah and His Prophet that he was committing those that he had committed and from the shame. Look at his shame. From one sin he could not bear to look upon the Face of the Prophet. How can we even think to judge those ones. How can we even think that they are not our role-models, that we are free to take Islam as we like and to love and to please our ego as we like. What have we done that we feel so free to come in the Presence of the Evliya with arrogance and stubbornness. May the remembrance of Hz. Tha’labah bring some of his good edep and character on us.
The old murids, they had so much fear and respect for their Sheykh that they could not even look at his face. The Great Wali, Hz. Aziz Mahmud Hudayi (KS), he was in charge of warming up his Shaykh’s wudu water for Fajr. He was a great wali. When he was a murid, that was all that the work that he was doing, warming up his Shaykh’s wudu water for Fajr. The Shaykh was older, and they lived in a very cold area. One morning Hz. Aziz Mahmud Hudayi got up late and he didn’t have time to prepare the water. He had to come to his Sheykh’s presence with that cold water. And he was shaking from that shame and that fear and that respect and that love, but he had to pour that water. And the Shaykh pulled his hands back and said, “you burned my hands today. This water is not heated with fire. This water is heated with the fire of regret coming from your heart.” Yes, that Ashk, that passion, that fire inside the heart, it can light the whole world up. It can burn us. Let that to burn us instead of the fire coming from Jahannam.
The fear of Allah. When you fear Allah, you become beloved to Allah. Holy Prophet (AS) said, “Nothing is more beloved to Allah than two drops and two marks. A tear-drop shed out of fear of Allah, and a drop of blood shed in Allah’s way, and a mark left in the Way of Allah, and a mark left in observing the Farz of Allah.” (Tirmizi).
Fear and Love yes. Islam is saying that Fear and Love, they are linked. Not fake love that they are singing about in the radio and putting in commercials to sell products to you, no. Real Love. The Love that exists between Allah and His Beloved Ones. The Love that exists between the Prophet and his Sahabis. The Love that exists between a Murshid and a Murid. That real love, it is connected to the fear. Because when you have that real love, your fear is disobeying and breaking your promise to your beloved one. That fear is fear that you are going to be out from his heart. And that fear is going to make you move, it is going to make you run, it is going to make you sacrifice your life to make your beloved happy. No religion can teach this except Islam. No teacher can teach this except the Holy Prophet (AS) and the Sheykhs.
Our Sheykh is explaining this, saying: “We have fear from Allah. We have fear because we love Allah. We don’t want to break our friendship, our relationship with our Lord. That’s why we are fearful.”
The world today is a fearless world. It is a world of ignorance and arrogance. Because from the little children to the old people, they don’t fear anymore. They don’t teach fear anymore. The word ‘fear’ is a dirty word. They don’t fear their parents. They don’t fear their leaders. They don’t fear their Holy People. They are living like the worst nations on the face of the earth that were punished. It is the Month of Safar. The ones with no fear of Allah, they are pulling Allah’s punishment. The ones who have Allah’s fear, they won’t fear anything else.
As Sultan el-Evliya is saying: “We shall fear from our Lord. O our Lord, forgive us. Angels tremble. Jibril, Mikail, Israfil, Azrail, tremble like leaves on a tree from the manifestation of Janab-i-Mawla. Allah (SWT) says, “O my servants fear me. Respect me.” O my Lord! O my Lord! O my Lord! Forgive us.May we have strength. Even if the whole world is full of shaytans, don’t fear. You can crush them all. Not one shaytan, not a thousand shaytans, even if the whole world is full of them. You can crush them with one step. O our Lord, our Subhan, we are weak servants, forgive us. For the sake of the beloved Prophet’s universal glory, You have created us and made an ummah for Your Beloved. Shukur Allah. You have honoured us by letting us serve him. What a beautiful honour. You won’t be sick or tired, you won’t fear. Look to serve the Beloved One. And Janab-i-Hakk orders us: “O My servants, fear Me.” O My Lord. O My Lord. O mankind watch your adab, watch your adab. If you watch your adab, there is a high honour in the presence of the Creator. Don’t bother to gather up (earthly) honour…If honour descends from above only then do you have honour. If power descends from above only then do you have power. If Iman descends from above only then do you have Iman. Say, Allah. Say it. You will have no worries. In the presence of Rabbul ‘Izzat nothing can harm you. O my Lord we are left ignorant. They haven’t taught us. The first thing to teach is the saying: “I looked in the association of the wise, and knowledge was last, and Edep was first.”
Grant us that Edep Ya Rabbi. Grant us that Fear of You and Your beloved ones, that comes from Love of You. Don’t let us to separate us from You Ya Rabbi. Grant us to have modesty and shame before You. Grant us to have the best Edep, the highest Fear, the highest Love, for the Ones who are Beloved to You. Keep us with them and keep us in their service. Forgive us. Do not reveal our weaknesses. Cover us with Your most beautiful cover dunya and ahiret. We are Your weak servants Ya Rabbi. For the sake of your most beloved ones. Amin.
