Question: One of the good characteristics of dogs is loyalty to the master no matter what. Why is this hard to put into our life?
Because which man is going to think that I am a dog and he is my master? Which man? In the west in the Judeo-Christian tradition, they know that the Hawariyyun, the disciples always call him master. Because to bow down to someone that looks like you, sounds like you, does everything like what you are doing yet this one is a master and I am lower than that, that is like poison to the ego. Why is that so difficult? It’s easy for a dog, different species, you understand? But Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi is saying, ‘either appear as you are or be as you appear.’ So what is it that you want? How do you want to appear? How do you want to be? ‘I want to be good like that,’ then fit your appearance to that. Fit your appearance to that.
The Saints they are saying there are twelve characteristics of the dogs that the Prophets and the Saints they carry. This is especially very difficult because in Islam people are looking down to the dogs saying it is unclean. But their characteristics, Allah is not mentioning us in the Quran but He is mentioning a dog in the Quran. Allah is mentioning the dog in the Quran. What is its name? Kitmeer. And what did he do? He stayed with the masters, the seven sleepers when they escape, and he sat down with them. What is it that is so difficult? Because a dog understands that he is a dog and that one is the master. But the man’s ego, the ego always say, ‘you are you and I am me.’ The ego is saying that to Allah. Allah is saying, ‘who are you and who am I?’ The spirit is saying, ‘you are my Lord and I am your creature.’ But the ego is saying, ‘you are you and I am me.’ Meaning, You are Lord and I am Lord. You are what You are and I am what I am.’ But who is giving the ego that power to speak like that? Allah. The Creator is giving the power. Then the Creator is giving the spirit of man the power to control that ego. Now understand how powerful it is that that ego cannot even be controlled by anything else, not even by the angels. They failed. But this is the thing. How is man going to look at himself? When you have a Master and you look at Him as ‘You are You and I am me,’ then you are going to fail. When things are nice, you can say that, ‘yes, you are my master.’ But when he actually has to be that one in authority, then so many doubts will come in. This has happened billions of times. We see it happening. And we see it happening in front of our eyes too.
May Allah keep us in check. Because to follow the spiritual way it is not that easy and it has its own laws as well.
