All praises are due to Allah, Lord of the Universes. All praises are due to Allah, the Lord of the Two Easts and the Two Wests, the Lord of the Heavens and the Earth and all that is between them. All praises are due to Allah Who is the Most Wise, the Just.
May all peace and blessings be upon our Master Sayyidina Muhammad (AS), the Protector of the Innocent, the Friend of the Oppressed, the Supporter of the Shariat, the Messenger of Justice, the Mercy to the Universes. May peace and blessings be upon his noble family and blessed companions, especially upon the Four Rightly Guided Khalifas, Hz. Abu Bakr el-Siddiq, Hz. Umar el Faruq, Hz. Osman el-Ghani, and Hz. Ali el-Murtaza, and all those who follow them until the Last Day.
Ya Ayyuhal Mu’minoon! O Believers! Shukur Alhamdulillah that we have passed the Three Holy Months, and we have passed the Days of Hajj, and we have passed the Day of Kurban. And we are now waiting and expecting the New Hijri Year of 1441, and we are waiting and expecting the Holy Day of Ashura. We are asking our Lord to make us from the people of Sincerity whose intentions and actions please Him in these Holy Days insyaAllah.
Ya Ayyuhal Mu’minoon! O Believers! Allah (SWT) has created us as Bani Adam, human beings. And as Bani Adam, we have been given a grant that is not given to any other creature in this world- it is the ‘Aql. Intelligence. And intelligence has been given to us for one reason- to know Allah and to worship Him. He Allah Jalla wa’Ala is challenging man over and over again in the Kuran-e-Kerim, saying: BismillahirRahmanirRahim “Afala Ta’qiloon?” “Don’t you think?” (12:109). He (SWT) is saying to mankind that He has given us this gift that He has not given to anything in creation, and that we must use it to understand the world around us, so that we can learn how to do what Allah wants. Everything in creation Allah is ordering and programming into that creation to do, except for the man. Allah has created the man to know Him, to get to know Him. He says in Surah Ambiya: BismillahirRahmanirRahim “We have certainly sent to you a Book, and in it is Zikr of you- don’t you think?” (21:10). And He is praising those who use their intelligence and gain the knowledge of Allah, saying: “Only those from among His Servants who has knowledge truly fear Him.” Sadaqallahul Azim (35:28).
And Hz. Umar el-Faruk is telling us how important using our intelligence is, saying: “The foundation of a man is his intelligence, the foundation of a man is his intelligence. His honor is in his religion, and his manhood is in his Akhlaq (his character).” (Kitab Adab Dunya wa Deen)
When Allah (SWT) talks about using intelligence, so many times He connects it to understanding what happened to the people before us. In Surah Yusuf, Subhana wa Ta’ala is saying: BismillahirRahmanirRahim “And We didn’t send before you any messengers except men whom We inspired from among the people of the townships. Haven’t they traveled the land and seen the consequences for those who were before them? And the home of the hereafter is best, for those who fear Allah- don’t you think?” Sadaqallahul Azim (12:109).
Travelling the land, looking at people before, and understanding what happened to them- this is history. History is not to put all these objects and art into one building into one building called a museum and everyone is just going to look and then going to go back without learning anything. Allah (SWT) is commanding us to know the history that is connected to the land and the place and the people, inside the land and the place and the people. Our Sheykh Sahib el-Sayf used to say that the Kuran-e-Kerim, so much of it, is giving the history of mankind. The Kuffar used to mock the Kuran for this reason saying: these are just ancient stories, these are just ancient fables.
Only the Jahil person dismisses the study of history. Our Muslim civilization developed and brought history to its highest level. One of the scholars that even the West admits is the father of historical study, Ibn Khaldun, said: “History informs us about the past nations and their habits, the Prophets and their lives, the Kings and their states and diplomacy, so that those who seek guidance in either worldly or religious matters, they will benefit.”
And our Sheykh, Sahib el-Sayf Sheykh Abdul Kerim el Kibrisi el-Rabbani (KS) is saying: “Look at your history. Muslims must know their history first for them to be able to understand the hadiths and the ayats. If you don’t know the history of Islam then you cannot understand the hadith of the Holy Prophet (AS).” How will Muslims know their history when they don’t even know their own calendar? We don’t even know that we are in the Islamic Year of 1440, majority, that we are in month, the last month of the calendar, Zul Hijj. Muslims of 21st century are forgetting their calendar, their dates, but the know when is Christmas, they know when is New Year, they know when is Easter, they know when is President’s Day, and they look forward to these holidays. But what Allah has put as important in these days, we have lost that. We are made to forget our history. This is not accidental. This is on purpose.
They are saying, “we started our Islamic Republics, our democracies, our dictatorships, 100 years ago, and we erase everything that came before. We are starting from year zero. “And when someone comes to them and says, “look at our history. You are making the same mistake. You should learn from what happened before,” they say, “Asateer al-Awwaleen- these are just ancient fables, old stories.”
Look at the calendar. In a few days we are going to enter the day that Hz. Osman el-Ghani, the 3rd Rightly Guided Khalifa, the day that he was martyred, the day that he was assassinated. There is a lesson in the life and in the martyrdom of Hz. Osman for all of us. The martyrdom of Hz. Osman shows how hatred and suspicion makes the ego to conquer the man, and can make people to starve and murder their own Khalifa. And the time of Hz. Osman is not the time that the Khilafa was weak, it was the time that the Khilafa was strongest. Everyone knew who Hz. Osman was. Everyone knows how great Hz. Osman was.
Everyone knows how beloved he was to the Holy Prophet (AS). Everyone was there, the Sahabi e-Kiram, when the Holy Prophet (AS) praised Hz. Osman saying, “Every Prophet had a close companion, and my close companion in Jannat will be Osman.” And everyone knew that the Holy Prophet (AS) had praised him saying, “After Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Lut, Osman is the first person who has made Hijrah with his entire family.” And everyone heard the Holy Prophet’s dua after Hz. Osman gave so much charity for the sake of Allah, to help Islam, the help the poor, to help Hakk, the Holy Prophet (AS) says “Ya Allah! I am pleased with Osman. Ya Allah! I am pleased with Osman. Ya Allah! I am pleased with Osman. You too be pleased with him!”
Everyone saw that one time Holy Prophet (AS) came to a janazah but he refused to pray for the person, and when the people asked why, Holy Prophet (AS) said: “This person had hatred for Osman, so Allah is angry with him.” And everyone saw that when Hz. Osman was Khalifa, he made sure everyone was eating food that rich people ate, while he himself ate just figs and vinegar. And the people could see the honor and power that came to Islam under Hz. Osman, that now the borders of Islam were being expanded all the way to India, to Spain, to Cyprus, to Iran.
But despite all of this, fitnah has to enter and some people betrayed him. Even though they heard the Holy Prophet praise him. Even though they had been drinking water from the hands of Hz. Osman. Even though they were eating from the table of Hz. Osman. They cut the food and the water to the house of the Khalifa. The munafiq Ibn Saba entered into Madinah and started to make fitnah between Arabs and Ajam, between Quraysh and other tribes, between Bani Hashim and Bani Ummayyah. He started spreading false propaganda and false claims against Hz. Osman. He started accusing Hz. Osman of being unjust, of being a tyrant, of betraying Rasulallah (AS). Hasha Astarghfirullah. This fitnah became so intense and evil that the munafiqs in the Masjid attacked Hz. Osman inside the Masjid al-Nabawi, taking his cane and breaking it. They started stoning Hz. Osman inside the Masjid until he had to be carried to his house.
They laid siege to the house of Hz. Osman, and didn’t let food or water to enter- even water from the well that Hz. Osman himself had bought for all the Muslims of Madinah. Some people came to Hz. Osman and said, let us fight, or let us take you out of Madinah. And Hz. Osman said, I will not fight, because I do not want to be the first Khalifah during whose time the blood of Muslims is spilled. And I will not leave Madinah because I cannot forsake the City of the Habibullah.
Finally, Hz. Osman, he saw the Holy Prophet (AS) appear at his window. And Holy Prophet gave Hz. Osman water to drink. And Hz. Osman said that later his roof opened, and Holy Prophet, Hz. Abu Bakr, and Hz. Umar entered and gave him water and said: “You will break your fast with us tomorrow.” (Tarikh Ibn Kathir). And the next day, the rebels attacked the door of Hz. Osman and set it on fire. They started climbing the house of Hz. Osman to get inside. Hz. Osman was sitting reading the Holy Kuran, keeping his fast. And the enemies of Allah started attacking Hz. Osman until his life left his body, and he became a Shaheed in the Way of Allah, and his blood was spilled on the Kuran that he was reading. The Kuran that he had gathered. The hatred in the heart of those rebels was so evil that they did not let Hz. Osman to be buried for three days- and even when his funeral was taken, it was done in secret. There are lessons in this history for those with eyes and ears, and hearts.
Listen to what Hz. Osman’s daughter, Hz. Ayesha bint Osman, said to the people after her father was buried, listen carefully. Hz. Ayesha said: “He was not my father only- he was a father to the Ummat. And those he considered his sons murdered him. O murderers of Osman! Remember that we are all Allah’s creatures, and we all have to return to Him. How terrible that someone so beloved to the Holy Prophet was murdered in cold blood, and you wouldn’t even let him be buried. Ya Allah! If the murdered Khalifa had wanted to exercise his authority, so many would have rose up to defend him. Truth and Justice were on his side, and the People of Taqwa would have taken up arms on his behalf. In that case, the rebels would have been killed, and blood would have been spilled. But that was not the way of Osman. What you consider to be Hakk, he knew it was Batil. He was against any bloodshed. He preferred to give up his own life than to spill blood and to start a civil war. O you murderers! As Muslims you had given a promise to be loyal and faithful to the Khalifa to whom you had given Beyat. You murdered your Khalifa, and you betrayed Islam. You made false propaganda and accusations against him- he showed everything you said was false, but you kept doing evil, and you have murdered an innocent man. O my father! You submitted to Allah’s Will like a true Muslim. In the middle of the Fitnah you showed patience, and you didn’t complain. You met your death with a smiling face. You are a Shaheed in the Way of Allah. Your place is in Paradise in the Sohbet of the Rasulallah (AS).”
These words are calling out throughout history. But in these words, you hear the daughter of Hz. Osman, Hz. Ayesha (RA), you hear her faith and you hear her submission and you hear her intelligence. You do not hear her curses. You don’t hear her anger. You don’t hear her hatred for what had happened to her father. These words that she had said are calling out throughout history. Those who are following in their footsteps should listen, should know how to react. These same words can be said for the Khalifa of the House of Osman, Sultan Abdul Hamid Han Jannat Makan, who gave up his rights to avoid the bloodshed of the Muslims. This is very important, because the Sultan Abdul Hamid Han, his generals came to him and they said ‘we can protect you, and we can defeat the enemies. Give us the order.’ But he, that friend of Allah, the Khalifa for the whole ummat, for the whole world, said ‘I do not want to be the cause of a civil war, of bloodshed. I will give up this title.
The same anger and hatred and jealousy and bitterness that moved the rebels to starve Hz. Osman and murder him is still alive in the hearts of so many Muslims. For what reason did the people betray Hz. Osman? For what reason did the people betray Sultan Abdul Hamid Han? For what reason do people betray their Beyat? For what reason do people betray the Ahli Bayt? It’s not for the Ahiret- it is for the dunya. It’s because of their ego. Because they believe that they are fighting for Hakk, but their Hakk is not Hakk. Their Hakk, in the eyes of Hakk, is Batil. They break their Beyat because they wanted something from their Sultan, and they didn’t get what they wanted. And because they are dissatisfied, they forget all their promises, they forget about all their love, they forget about their honor and they forget about the grants and the help that they had received- and they become rebels who are regarded as Promise-Breakers by Allah.
O People! Beware! This is for you and for me. Beware! The Holy Prophet (AS) has given warning saying “When Allah gathers the first and last generations on the Day of Judgment, He will raise a flag for every traitor. It will be announced- here is this Traitor, with the person’s name and his father’s name.” (Bukhari). The Ummat committed treachery against the Last Khalifa, the Ottoman Khalifa. And they repeated the treachery that came from the time of Hz. Osman. Betrayal against the Beloveds of Allah has a Price- and Allah takes revenge on their behalf.
Hz. Hasan ibn Ali (RA) said that after Hz. Osman was murdered he had a dream. And Hz. Hasan and Hz. Husayn they were commanded by Hz. Ali to protect Hz. Osman. Hz Hasan said: “I saw my Grandfather Rasulallah (AS). He was standing next to the Throne of Allah and he looked worried- and this was the first time I saw him looking worried in a dream. And then Hz. Abu Bakr came behind Rasulallah (AS) and put his hand on his shoulder. Then Hz. Umar came behind them and put his hand on the shoulder of Hz. Abu Bakr. And after this Hz. Osman came, and his face was full of blood, and his head was in his hands. And he said: “Ya Rasulallah! Ask the people- for what sin did they slaughter me like a cow?” And when Hz. Osman said this, the Throne of Allah began to shake and two streams of blood came down from the Throne of Allah. And a voice came out from the Ghayb (from the Unseen) and declared: “Until today, no believer has taken the life of another believer. From today until the Judgment Day, believers will continue to take the lives of other believers.”
This is still happening. That punishment for the Martyrdom of Hz. Osman is still continuing. And we are experiencing the punishment and the Displeasure of Allah for every sin that was committed against our Khulafa’ who were betrayed by this nation.
Sahib el-Sayf is saying: “This Ummat, these people right now are paying the price for the crimes against Sultan Abdul Aziz Han. We didn’t come to Sultan Abdul Hamid yet… People are paying the price, nations are paying the price and still they are not waking up. Now from Afghanistan to Iraq, from Indonesia to Malaysia, from the Philippines to Qudus, from Africa to Morocco, from Bosnia to Chechenistan, everywhere it’s burning. People are paying the price. People are paying the price of uprising against the Sultan. Nothing else. Allah’s mercy is always opening and He is sending other people to wake people to the right way. They are not waking up! Don’t wake. Other ones are coming. Never is it going to become easier. Allah is not going to give in. We are going to give in.”
O Believers! Allah’s Will is going to prevail. His Will is going to take over every will. Our will is not. Allah is the Sultan of Sultans, the King of Every World, the Master of All Existence. He is our Master, we are His creatures. The disaster of this world for the last hundred years is because mankind has tried to become its own master. It’s not working. The world is in suffering. Allah (SWT) is the King, and He has appointed Khalifas in this world. The Zahir Khalifa is veiled- change your heart to love the Khalifa and want his return. The Spiritual Khalifas, the Awliyaullah, they are still there. The Beyat to those Khalifas, it is still there. A person who breaks his Beyat to his Sheykh, definitely will break his Beyat to the Khalifa. We have to look to that part of our ego that has betrayal and khiyanat inside it and to clean it. Don’t say you don’t have it. Look. Our ego has the worst evil. Look and clean it.
That ego can only be purified when you submit yourself to the training and to the cleaning from the Sheykh. The believers who want to prepare for the Khalifa to come back, the believers who want to prepare for Mehdi (AS) to come, we must prepare for that cleaning of our hearts. If they don’t, if we don’t, then our ego is the enemy inside and it’s going to fool us. In the way of Tarikat it’s going to fool us, in the way of Islam it’s going to fool us. They will repeat the mistake of the rebels of Hz. Osman’s time, and the mistake of the rebels of Sultan Abdul Hamid Han’s time. Only when you find, and you must look, look to that darkness of betrayal inside yourself and to conquer it under the guidance of your Sheykh, that is the only time that you can become loyal. Otherwise, one day, that darkness will overtake you.
That training of the ego is not meant to make you feel “spiritual” and to make you feel good and high. That training of the ego it is hard, because we have let the dirtiness of our ego become so deep inside of us, that removing it, it is going to cause some hardship. And to take that out, there is going to be some pain. As Mevlana Jelaleddin Rumi (KS) says: “Do not expect to always be happy on the Way. You’ve been caught by a lion. Inside you there is a monster that needs to be tied up and whipped. Watch the man beating the rug- watch the man beating the rug. He’s not angry at it- he wants to get the dirt out from inside. The dirtiness of your ego isn’t going to come out with one hit. Continuous work is needed, discipline is needed. In dreams, and even awake, you’re going to hear your Beloved screaming at you.
Curing an animal skin, the tanner rubs in acid and all kinds of strong, dangerous chemicals- but this makes a beautiful soft leather. But what does the half-finished skin know? Every hard thing that happens is working on you like that.” This is the Way of the Saints. This is the Way of Tarikat. This is the way of the Prophet (AS). And when you look at the lives of the Companions of the Prophet, for 23 years and beyond, they held on and they became soft and they became a use for their most Beloved one. This is continuing that tradition. This is the Purpose of a Dergah. Sultan el-Evliya Sheykh Mevlana Muhammad Nazim Adil el-Hakkani (KS) is saying: “Dergah is a training center to make them to leave bad manners, to leave Kufr, to leave the ways of Shaitan, to kick out shaitanic teachings! This is the personality of the Dergah!”
The Dergah is a place of protection. And the Sheykhs, they know how to be protected from the areas of curse, and the Sheykhs show us how to be protected, and how to run to the areas of Mercy. The Sheykhs show us how to enter to the Caravan of the Beloveds of Allah. Sahib el-Sayf is saying: “There are two tajallis that are continuously coming down to the world. The Mercy of Allah and the curse of Allah are both raining down. People are running saying, “Fire is raining on me. Let me find a shelter.” Nobody is running to say, “The curse is raining. Let’s find a shelter. Where is that shelter?” That shelter is only on the Sirat-ul Mustaqim, on that road. The curse is raining on all other places now. Don’t stay in those areas… Why are you not running to the mesjids of Allah saying, “Ya Rabbi! We are weak servants. You are sending these evil ones to destroy us. We are asking for help.”
As Husayn (RA) was saying, “I am asking You, Ya Rabbi! If it is good for us to be helped, then help us. But if there is something in it that we don’t know, then give us the patience to be patient and to come to Your Divine Presence clean.” We are asking our Lord to protect us from the evil inside of us and the evil outside of us. We are asking our Lord to let us to keep our Promise. We are asking our Lord to keep us in the Caravan of those who are in His Pleasure, in this life and next, walking behind our Sheykh. Amin.
