All praises are due to Allah, Lord of the Universes. All praises are due to Allah Who is Exalted above His Creation. All praises are due to Allah, the One, the Absolutely Unique, the One without partner. All praises are due to Allah Who has sent guidance to mankind through His Prophets and Messengers. All praises are due to Allah Who sent His Habib, Sayyidina Muhammad (AS), as the Seal of the Prophethood. And may all peace and blessings be upon the Imam of the Messengers, the Master of the Prophets, the Intercessor of the Last Day, the Helper of Bani Adam, the Mercy to the Universes, Sayyidina Muhammad (AS), and upon his noble family and blessed companions, especially upon the Four Khulafa-e-Rashideen, Hz. Abu Bakr el-Siddiq, Hz. Umar elFaruq, Hz. Osman el-Ghani, and Hz. Ali el-Murtaza, and all those who follow them until the Last Day.
May peace and blessings be upon the Noble Friends of Allah and upon the Pious Scholars, especially upon the Mashayikh of the Naksibendi Way. May peace and blessings be upon the Umara’ and the Khulafa’, especially upon the Sultans of the Devlet-il-Aliyye, the Holy Ottomans. May peace and blessings be upon those who honor them until the Last Day. Amin
Ya Ayyuhal Mu’minoon! O Believers! Today is the Last Day of our Islamic year of 1440. Insha’Allah tonight we enter into the Holy Month of Muharram. Let us end this year asking with the sincere dua of our hearts, which is that Allah (SWT) sends us a Sultan. Let us make the last Khutba of this year in the tradition of our Ottoman Grandfathers, saying: “Ya Allah! Have Mercy on the Khalifas who have been on the Right Path, and the Imams who have been well-guided, who have ruled with righteousness, and have worked for justice. Ya Allah! Aid and help Your servant and Your Khalifa, the Great Sultan, the Exalted Hakkan, the Shadow of Allah on Earth, the Master of the Kings of Arabia and the Ajam, Servant of the Two Sacred Houses. For he is a Sultan, son of a Sultan, the Ghazi Sultan Abdul Hamid Han, son of the Ghazi Sultan Abdul-Majid Han, son of the Ghazi Sultan Mahmud Han. May Allah cause his Khilafat to endure and to spread justice in his reign and cause righteousness and generosity to extend on the two worlds to the end of time and the end of ages, Amin!”
Insha’Allah in this Last Jummah of 1440, we are making intention to make our next Jummah in Istanbul with the Holy Ones who are waiting behind the Mountain of Qaf. May their appearance be soon, insya’Allah.
O Believers! Believers should not be in heedless station. Believers should not be in ghaflat. And Believers should not be in ghaflat about Time. Allah (SWT) has imposed the reality of Time upon mankind as a way of measuring where we were, where we are, and where we are going to. When time passes, we are passing. Allah (SWT) swears by Time. Allah (SWT) honors Time. Allah (SWT) is giving us a message through the Hadith Qudsi saying: “The son of Adam abuses me. He curses time and I am time, for in my hand are the night and day.” (Bukhari and Muslim).
O Believers! How are we using the time that Allah has given to us on the face of this earth. We had the time before time. We had the time before we were sent to this world and we are going to have the time after this time. But how are we using this time that we have been sent to this world as a test. Hz. Hasan al-Basri, the great friend of Allah (RA) said: “O mankind, you are nothing but a number of days, and whenever a day passes away, a part of you passes away too.” Insya’Allah ar-Rahman, we are believers. We are at the end of the year 1440. The year, the months, the days, they give us landmarks that we can use to reflect and see how we have been spending this time.
We are believers following a Sheykh, one of the Greatest Sheykhs, Sahib el-Sayf. And in this Jemaat, we are running after Holy Days and Holy Nights. So look, we must look at our last year. We must look at our Muharram. We must look at our Ashura. We must look at our Rabiul Awwal. We must look at our Mawlid. Look at our Rajab. Look to our Raghaib and our Miraj. Look at our Shaban. Look to our Beraat. Look to our Ramazan. We must look at our Laylatul Qadr. We must look at our Zul Hijj. We must look at our Kurban. Look at today. We have all of these stations, these time marks in front of us. We will be asked. We make so many duas in these nights. We make so many promises to Allah in these nights. We make so many pledges and oaths in these nights. Have we kept those promises? Have we seen the answers to those duas? How have we changed? Are we staying the same? Are we not caring? Understand that in Islam, staying the same is a sign of spiritual death. In this world, no one who is running after this dunya wants to remain the same. They want to make their next day, their next year better than today and this year. But insya’Allah ar-Rahman, we are believers. We are looking at our faith and we must look at our spirit and we must look at our connection to Allah SWT. Are we staying the same? And getting worse is a sign of disaster. Because our guide, Hz. Ali (KW) is narrating that Holy Prophet (AS) said: “The one whose two days are the same is a loser. The one whose today is worse than his yesterday is accursed.” (Daylami).
Our Sheykh, Sahib el-Sayf Sheykh Abdul Kerim elKibrisi el-Rabbani (KS) is explaining this Hadith to us saying: “We must not make two days the same. Every single day you must progress. (Progress) is not only by the worldly understanding that, “We have one room, make it another room, make it another building.” No. We must prepare yourself, we must prepare our hearts by removing what is wrong in it and putting inside it what is good as the Holy Prophet’s (AS) heart opened and something was put in it, we must prepare our hearts and we must prepare ourselves to be ready for that Miraj, that ascension, to be ready for that elevation because what is given to the Holy Prophet (AS) is given to his nation.”
So we should check ourselves. Miraj is a journey. Miraj is a journey of returning to Allah (SWT). Has our year been a journey of to Allah? Or has been a journey of heedlessness, or has it been a journey concentrating on this dunya? Has it been a journey of going through tests, and going through different experiences, and building from those experiences to become better and come closer to our Lord? Or have we instead been going down from our Makam, changing for the worse.
Remember- the Miraj was not an easy journey. Holy Prophet (AS) had to see the hellfire on his way to Sidratul Muntaha. He was tested by sheytan and dunya on the Miraj. Tests, difficulty, they are part of that journey. But we have to go higher than those tests, we have to pass those tests. So this is the way that we are going to check ourselves. And Allah Jalla wa’Ala, in one of the most important Surahs in the Holy Quran, is showing us how He wants us to use our Time. BismillahirRahmanirRahim. Wal ‘Asr. Innal Insana la-fee Khusr. il-lal-lazeena aamanu wa ‘amilu-s-salihaat. Wa tawasaw-bil-haqqi wa tawasaw-bis-sabr. “(By Time. Indeed, mankind is in a state of loss. Except those who have Faith, and do good deeds, and join together in the mutual teaching of Truth, and encourage each other to Patience and Faithfulness.”) Sadaqallahuladzim (103:1-3).
The Sahaba-e-Kiram, the companions of the Prophet, when they would meet with each other, they would not leave the gathering until one of them would say the ayats, BismillahirRahmanirRahim, “By Time, verily mankind is in a state of loss.” And the conditions for those who are exceptions are very heavy. And Imam Shafii (RA) is saying: “If the people, if mankind, were to reflect on Surah al-Asr, it would be enough for them.” (Tafsir ibn Kathir). This Surah has everything we need. The Surah is reminding us- be aware of Time. When mankind is in ghaflat, mankind is not aware of himself and how he is passing the time. Mankind is losing. He is in a state of loss. The only ones who don’t lose are the ones who not only have faith but their faith will force them to do good deeds, to stand up against to Batil. The ones who come together to learn and to teach the Hakk, and in learning and teaching the Hakk, to know that the test are coming to us, it is difficult, it is heavy, but they must come together to be patient and to be loyal.
Who is not losing? The companions of the Prophet (AS), they are not losing. They are people of Sohbet, the People of Association. Holy Prophet (AS) is making this clear in his Hadith Sherif where he said: “Isn’t the world cursed, and isn’t everything in it cursed? Except for Zikrullah and what helps it, and the Person of Knowledge, and the Student.” (Tirmizi). Zikrullah, the remembrance of Allah, remembering His favors, remembering His tests, to be grateful, to hold on, it connects a man to his Lord. That man realizes that his time it is with his Lord, his existence is with his Lord. The Person of Knowledge, not book knowledge, not internet knowledge, the person who has knowledge of himself, and knowledge of his Lord, that one worships. And the student is trying to learn from the Person of Knowledge, how to return to his Lord. This is Tarikat. And this is the way of safety from the curse of dunya. This is the way of safety from the curse of our ego, from the curse of our desires, from the curse of sheytan and fitna.
Follow your Sheykh, that guide. His job is for you to understand and for you to learn how to clean yourself and to bring you to your Lord clean. That is the job he has been given from Holy Prophet (AS) because that was the job of the Holy Prophet (AS) and that was the job of all Prophet. And the Evliyaullah they keep their Promise. Following the guide, you will see faith and hope in this world and hereafter. Separation from that guide, it will cause bitterness to enter into every sweetness that you have. As Ghawth Abu Madyan is saying: “Where is the good taste of life except in the Sohbet of the Fuqara? They are the Masters, the Sultans, the Ameers.” The association, the Sohbet of the Sheykh, it shows us ourselves, it shows us our Lord, it takes us out from this time that is belonging to the lowest of the low and it’s putting us to the time that is belonging to Allah. And it’s teaching us how to live and how to pass in a way that is pleasing with Allah. And when Allah is happy with us, we will experience the sweetness in every bitterness that we go through here, and the sweetness that is promised for us in the Hereafter, we say it is bitterness if it means separation from You.
Listen to Sahib el-Sayf’s advice: “Look at everyday that is passing, every page that is coming to the Judgment Place. Everyday there are twenty-four drawers. In twenty-four hours what you are doing, what you did and who did you live for? Twenty-four hours. The mukmin is awake, the mukmin is not in ghaflat, the mukmin is watching. Every action that you did, what was the intention behind it? This is what’s important. This is what the prophets came to teach us and this is what Islam is ordering to us. The 500 good deeds that Holy Prophet (AS) is ordering us to keep, this is what it’s teaching us. And the 800 forbidden deeds that are keeping us away from becoming better servants of our Lord and supporting our ego. He has created us, He sent us to this world and He is continuously sending us whatever our need is. Only thing that we have to do is to turn back to say, “Oh Ya Rabbi, You created me and You gave me all this. You love me and I love You back.” That’s all. That’s what man has to do. And if you cannot do that too, thuu… you are a cursed one. Not to say that you have honor. You have no honor. Your honor belongs only to the toilet, to sit on the toilet and to say, “I am the most honorable.” Allah (SWT) has given the honor to the children of Adam and He is ordering us to keep that honor and He is teaching us how we are going to keep that honor… Become a valuable one. If you are looking for safety in Dunya and Akhirat then this is what we must be busy with. Otherwise, you can bring not one thousand books but one hundred thousand books, it’s not going to help you. The Hajj session finished. Millions went to Hajj and came back. So many came back empty handed and so many as soon as they moved from there Sheytan put his rope around their necks right away saying, “Come back to me. You cannot run.” Run to escape from that slavery. Run to the servanthood of Allah (SWT).
InshaAllah ar-Rahman in some more days we are entering the holy month of Muharram. The New Year of the Muslims, not the New Year of the pagans that people were worshipping (other than Allah). The New Year of the Muslims. Muharram is coming. We are entering in it. Prepare yourselves for that. As everyone is running to copy saying, “What is your New Years Resolution? What are you going to do? What is the intention you made that you are going to change this year?” “Yes, I am going to become more donkey.” …That’s not an honor. New Year is coming, yes. Make to your own self saying, “Ya Rabbi, I am making intention to become a better servant to You this year. I am a weak servant. Help me.” Say ‘Help me’ sincerely and look how fast help is going to reach to you. It’s not far. Very near. Once the Sahaba-e Kiram were making du’a very loudly. The Holy Prophet (AS) came to them saying, “You are not asking someone who is far from you. He is very near to you. He is nearer to you than your jugular vein.”
We cannot find more beautiful advice than this. There is nothing as beautiful as the words of the Evliya, when they tell you how to speak to your Lord. We are making intention for our new year to be a better servant, to be a strong servant, to be a year of servanthood. We don’t to desire anything but servanthood. We are making Taqlid of the friends of Allah, and we are hoping to experience from this Taqlid, something from the reality of this dua, saying: “Ya Rabbi, you created us, and you gave us everything. You love us, and we love You back. You love us, and we love You back. You love us, and we Love You back.” Amin.
