Beware of Your Enemy

All praises are due to Allah, Lord of the Universes, Malik al-Mulk. BismillahirRahmanirRahim, “O Allah! Lord of Power and Rule. You give Power to whom You please, and You take power away from whom You please. You honor whom You please, and You humiliate whom You please. In Your Hand is all good. Verily, You have power over all things. You cause the night to pass into the day, and You cause the day to pass into the night. And You bring forth the living from the dead, and You bring forth the dead from the living. And You give Rizq to whom You please, without any accounting.” Sadaqallahuladzim (3:26-27).

May all peace and blessings be upon the Master of the Messengers, Sayyidina Muhammad (AS). “O Allah! Please send Salawat upon Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad, just as you send Salawat upon Ibrahim and the Family of Ibrahim. And bless Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad, just as you blessed Ibrahim. And send Mercy upon Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad, just as you sent Mercy upon Ibrahim and the Family of Ibrahim.” Holy Prophet (AS) said, “Whoever recites this Salawat, I shall be a witness for him and give Shafaat to him on the Day of Judgment.” (Tubari).

Ya Ayyuhal Mu’minoon! O Believers! We have enemies in this dunya who are constantly trying to defeat us and bring us down to everlasting disasters. These enemies are not trying to just kill us- these enemies are trying to ruin our Akhiret, and to prevent us from returning to our Original Home. Don’t try to look for the physical enemies. Don’t try to say, ‘our enemies is this nation,’ or ‘this group of people.’

Our Sheykh, Sahib el?Sayf Sheykh Abdul Kerim el-Kibrisi el-Rabbani (KS) is saying: You have to know your enemy. Who is the enemy? Sheytan was living in Paradise. He was like the king of Paradise. He had the power in Paradise. He had the knowledge in Paradise. He had everything. He became disobedient to Allah. Allah gave warning to him, “Leave the disobedience. Make the prostration, make the Sejdah. I am the Creator, not you. You are under the authority and order to obey My orders. Make the sejdah to Adam (AS). Don’t look at ‘This one is that one, this one is higher or this one is lower’. It’s not for you to decide. It’s for Me to decide. And I decide that you are going to make Sejdah to this one. Make Sejdah.’ Sheytan insisted arrogantly and stubbornly saying, ‘No, I’m not making Sejdah.’ ‘Make Sejdah before I kick you out from here. I have all the power in My hand. You have nothing. Make the Sejdah.’ He says, ‘No.’ Still insisting. And Allah is saying to him, ‘Get lost from here.’ Saying to angels, ‘Kick him out from Paradise.’ So he was coming out from the most beautiful place and he was losing every beauty that was given to him. He turned into a very ugly looking creature. He was one of the most beautiful appearance creatures in the Paradise. He turned into the worst ugly creature.”

That Sheytan, his mission, his one mission, is to try to bring mankind to the hellfire. Allah (SWT) is calling out to mankind in Surah Yasin, saying, BismillahirRahmanirRahim, “Didn’t I order you, O you Children of Adam, that you should not worship (serve) sheytan- for indeed, he is your Open Enemy!” Sadaqallahuladzim (36:60). Allah (SWT) is describing what sheytan’s mission against us is. After Allah (SWT) kicked sheytan out of Paradise, sheytan said: BismillahirRahmanirRahim, “Now, because You sent me astray, verily I shall wait to ambush them on Your Straight Path. Then I will attack them from the front and the back, from the right and the left. And You will not find most of them grateful to You.” Allah said: “Get out of Paradise, disgraced and banished. If any of them follow you? surely I will fill hell with all of you.” Sadaqallahuladzim (7:16-18). This is the mission of sheytan. Our Holy Prophet (AS), and his Evliyaullah, they came to teach us how to fight against sheytan. They came to teach us about the worst enemy that is between our two sides, our ego, that is becoming friends with sheytan and opening the doors to sheytan. Sheytan cannot enter us. Sheytan cannot open that door. Our ego has to open the door for him and our job is not only to be the enemy of sheytan but to be the enemy of our ego, to make sure that he does not betray and open the door from the inside. Sahib el-Sayf is saying: Allah kicked that one away from the Divine Presence. “Go away until judgment day and after judgment day, you will be having a severe punishment. And all those who are going to follow you, who are going to accept your teachings, and who are going to do what you want, they will be with you in that punishment. All those who make mistakes and turn back to Me, then ask forgiveness from Me, they will find Me forgiving!”

So from that time, until today, until judgment day, there are only two groups of people. One group is obedient, one group disobedient. Nobody should misunderstand about disobedience! So many people sometimes they say “What can I do? I was born like that.” Nobody was born disobedient. Everyone was born innocent and obedient creatures; but later, ego and Shaitan make them to become disobedient to their Lord. All that because they don’t want to listen to anything, to anybody. They just want to listen to what their ego says. Ego is supported by shaitans and spirit is supported by intelligence; and intelligence is always ordering to us, “Consult with somebody about the things that you don’t know. If you want safety, you must consult. If you don’t want safety, consult with your ego. You may reach to safety; you may not reach to safety.” So our Lord is saying to us, especially when it comes to Ahiret (to Hereafter life), “You must consult those that I sent to you to be the Guides; and those ones are the Prophets and the books that I have sent to you and those who are holding on tightly to the Prophet’s (AS) way or life style. You must consult with them to understand what it is that you have to do in this world, what is waiting for you, how you are going to prepare for this journey.”

Seyh Efendi is explaining that the Guides are sent by Allah (SWT) Himself. The Guides are there to bring the Prophetic Teaching, to show mankind how to save themselves from an enemy who has made it his purpose for thousands of years to destroy the children of Adam and bring them to the depths of Jahannam. Sultan el-Evliya Sheykh Mevlana Muhammad Nazim Adil el-Hakkani is explaining that the Guides are coming from Allah’s Order, saying: “(Quran is saying in Surah Kahf): BismillahirRahmanirRahim, “He whom Allah guides is rightly guided. But whoever Allah leaves astray, for him you will not find a “Waliyyan Murshida” (A Guiding Protector).” That’s it. “Murshid” is one word and it is enough, meaning that for every human being there must be a guide. The one who doesn’t have a guide, it is a sign that he has gone astray. The ayat means, “The one who is guided by Allah is truly guided. And the one who has gone astray cannot find a Saint to guide him.” Subhan’Allah, the Holy Quran! How do they deny the Rightly Guided Ones….Not just anyone can be a Guide. The nation now is denying everything in the Holy Quran, which says for every servant there must be a Saintly Guide, Waliyyan Murshida…Without a Saintly Guided One, Waliyyan Murshida, there cannot be victory.”

The Saintly Guides are the ones who have already walked the road, and they already have done battle with sheytan, and they are coming back to show us how to not fall into his tricks and his traps, how to protect ourselves from sheytan. They are the ones who know their egos completely, and therefore, know Allah. “Man ‘arafa nafsahu, fa-qad ‘arafa Rabbahu.” “The one who knows his nafs, knows Allah.” The Greatest Helper, Ghawth al-Azam, Sheykh Abdul Qadir el-Geylani (KS) is explaining how that Saintly Guide is in fact preparing you for the Greater Jihad against the ego, saying: “Arrogance, hypocrisy, egoism, are all arrows of sheytan aimed at your hearts. One should make a strategy to defend oneself from this attack. The correct strategies are explained and demonstrated by the Mashayikh. You should listen and obey their commands and act on them. They will guide you on the path of Allah since they have already travelled on this path. Ask their advice on matters relating to the Nafs, Hawa, and other weaknesses because they have also suffered their consequences and are well aware of the dangers and harms of evil desires. They have battled these over a long period of time and can confront, control and defeat them.” Sahib el-Sayf is explaining this to us, saying: “what’s the job of the prophets? To teach mankind how to control their ego.

The Holy Prophet (AS) is coming from the war. He came to his masjid, he sat and the Sahaba-e Kiram came and they sat. He said to them, ‘Now we are turning from the small Jihad to a greater Jihad, to the bigger Jihad, from a small war to a bigger war.’ They said, ‘Ya Rasulullah, we are just coming from war, so many Sahaba died, so many are wounded, so much wealth disappeared. Can there be a bigger war than this?’ He said, ‘Yes. The war that you are going to make against your ego, against your Nafs, that is the biggest Jihad that you are going to make.’ And that Jihad must continue until you enter to the grave. You cannot let it go. You cannot say, ‘Oh, today I fixed myself, my ego is complete, so I’m going to do as I like.’ You cannot do as you like. The more you are completing your ego the more you are going to see Allah’s order more detailed to you. You watch every word that you say, you watch every step you make. This is the reason of Tarikat. Tarikat is not for you to eat each other, Tarikat is not for people to sit next to each other and hate each other. It’s not that. Tarikat is to teach you, to take you from the lower self and to bring you to the highest station. If you are not doing that then it doesn’t matter what kind of Sheykh you have. People didn’t listen to the Prophet (AS). They ended up in Jahannam. Abu Jahil didn’t listen to the Prophet (AS). So many like Abu Jahil didn’t listen to the Prophet (AS). They were sitting in front of him, they were watching him, they didn’t listen to the Prophet (AS). Who they listened to? To their ego, to their Sheytan. And the end? They are in Jahannam. Right now that we are talking the fire is burning. Azrail is going to come to you and to me. Maybe tomorrow, maybe earlier than that. Don’t forget, the way you live, that’s how you are going to die, the way you die, that’s how you are going to rise. Whatever you are busy with at that time, that’s how you are going to die. If you are busy cleaning yourself, your ego, you are okay. If you are busy praising your ego, you are in trouble.”

We should really listen and understand Holy Prophet’s words and our Seyh Efendi’s words. This jihad, of fighting the ego, of cleaning ourselves, of purifying our hearts, of knowing ourselves, this is the greatest Jihad. There is no other struggle, no other knowledge greater than that. It is a greater jihad than physically fighting and dying in the Way of Allah. If we take it lightly, if we waste our times in the Tarikat, if we don’t listen to the Waliyyan Murshida, we are going to be waste. We may be physically sitting in the Jamaat, but our inside is like Ebu Jehil inside the Jamaat. May Allah protect us from that. And if the angel of death comes to us while we are busy fighting our ego, if the angel of death comes to us while we are busy engaging in the greatest jihad and if we die at that time, we will be raised as the greatest martyr. Azrail is coming for us. Death is coming for us. Remembering death and preparing for death is enough. “Kafa bil Mawt-ee Wa’izan ya Umar.” As Hz Umar had on his ring, “Death is enough of an advisor to you, ya Umar.” And Hz. Osman said, “The believer is in six types of fear, the first fear is that Allah (SWT) will take away his iman. The second is that the angels will write down things that will expose him on Judgment Day. The third is that sheytan will make his deeds to be cancelled out. The fourth is that Azrail will take his spirit while he’s in ghaflat. The fifth is that the dunya will trick him and make him work for other than Akhiret. And the sixth is that his family and his children take so much of his time that he neglects Zikrullah.” Hz Osman said this. These are the worries of the Sahaba and the believers, these are the worries of the Tabi’ins and the believers, these are the worries of the ahle bayt.

We in Tarikat especially should be worried about these, not about our small dunya lives. When we worry about our Akhiret, that is a sign that we are preparing properly for our Akhiret. And insha’Allah if we stay with those who are reminding us of death and preparing us for the Next Life, sheytan and his workers will run away from us. We know this from the Hadith of Holy Prophet (AS). Once Allah (SWT) ordered sheytan to go and speak truthfully to Holy Prophet (AS). Ibn ‘Abbas (RA) is saying that Holy Prophet (AS) asked him, “How many people from my Ummat do you love?” Sheytan had to answer truthfully and he said: Ten kinds. The tyrannical ruler, the Zaalim ruler. The arrogant. The rich who don’t care how they get their wealth or how they spend it. The scholars who find excuses for the tyranny of the rulers. The businessman who cheats. The one who monopolizes a product. The person who does Zina. The person who deals in Riba. The miser who doesn’t care how he collects his wealth. And the alcoholic.” These are the ten kinds of people that sheytan loves.

Then Holy Prophet (AS) said, “Who are your enemies from my Ummat?” Sheytan said, “Twenty kinds. The first is you, ya Muhammad (AS) – I truly hate you! (hasha estaghfirullah) Then the scholar who acts on his knowledge. The one who memorizes Quran and fulfills its Orders. The Muezzin for the five namaz who calls Azan only for Allah’s sake. The one who loves the poor, the needy, and the orphans. The one who has a merciful heart. The one who humbles himself in front of the Truth. The young man who grows up in the obedience of Allah Azza wa Jall. The one who only eats halal. Two young men who love each other for the Sake of Allah. The one who is always running to do his namaz in Jamaat. The one who offers prayers at night while everyone else sleeps. The one who stops his Nafs from committing haram.
The one who advises his brother without any agenda. The one who always stays in wudu’. The one who is generous. The one with good Edep and Akhlaq. The one who believes in what His Lord has guaranteed for him. The one who does good to widows. And the one who prepares himself for death.” (Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar).

Count those twenty that sheytan hates. The Dergah, the Tarikat, the Jamaat, it teaches you all of them. If you stay in the Sohbet of a Sheykh, you become the hated one of sheytan. And the enemies of sheytan, they are Beloved to Allah. Insha’Allah, we are asking our Lord to keep us with His Friends, and to keep us away from the friends of sheytan. Insha’Allah we are asking to take the advice of our Sheykh and apply it to our lives, and to reach to safety, this life and next life. Amin.
