Why does the Shaykh appear differently to different people?

Question: Why does the Sheykh appear to some people in a majestic way and why do some people look at him as a simple person?

A man came to the Prophet (AS) and say, ‘Ya Muhammad, you are the most ugly person I’ve ever seen,’ estaghfirullah hasha, Prophet says, ‘you are right.’ Another man came to him and says, ‘Ya Rasulullah, you are the most beautiful person that I’ve ever seen, and the Prophet (AS) says, ‘yes, you are right too.’ And one companion says, ‘how can they both be right, ya Rasulullah?’ Prophet (AS) says, ‘they are both right because I am a mirror. I am a mirror.’

The Sheykh is not one person. The Sheykh cannot even claim to be himself. He’s not. He is representing something. And whatever that he represents, then that time if that one that he represents has a million different looks, as much as he represents, as much as he tries, as much as that is given to him, he will also have that. Because he cannot claim anything too. Our Sheykh, almost every picture he looks like a completely different person too. He can be majestic and he can be simple. And that is also in him. He’s not one person. The Sheykh, the man is not an idol. Idol doesn’t change. This one, not that he changes, but you can never discover him anyway. You think you discover, something else happens, something else happens because he is a reflection of his Prophet. You can never discover the ocean of the Prophet. You cannot discover the ocean of Allah. But it’s easy when you are having a Sheykh now, to have an understanding. You see the sign and you say, ‘Allah, Allah. This is the greatness of my Lord. I’m understanding through the greatness of the Prophet, the greatness of my Sheykh. This is the greatness of my Lord.’ Then that time you are not going to make your Lord to be down to your level, down to your own understanding. You say, ‘I can never reach to him. Once I reach to him, he shows me another horizon. Once I reach there he shows me another horizon.’ And it’s okay. It’s beautiful. It’s never ending. So your journey with Allah is never ending too.

So the Sheykh is a mirror. And he is representing now, not only mirror showing to you but if you look hard enough, he’s a mirror of his Sheykh. He must reflect what is there. And depending on how clear your heart is, then you’ll be able to get that properly. If not there’s so many people who look at our Sheykh Effendi or Sheykh Mevlana especially, and say, ‘eh, he’s just a simple old man,’ estaghfirullah. But then there are those who look at him and say, ‘I can’t look at him because he disappears and it’s as if this whole universe is in him and he is in this whole universe.’ How are we going to understand that if you look at your Sheyh with animal eyes? How are you going to understand that when you look at your Sheykh with your egoistic eyes?

No, you cannot trust this eyes. The human eyes is one of the weakest eyes that Allah SWT has created physically. Animals can see more, and it is in this physical world, it’s not spiritual. But the spiritual eyes, not even the angels they can see. They cannot. They have no permission. So you must try to look at our Sheykh then with different eyes, not with the eyes of the ego. That time you may judge him too. You may say, he’s like this, he’s like that because he is a man, as the one who is judging the Prophet (AS). But the one like Hz Ali (KW) that it was unveiled to him how the Prophet (AS) was, and he saw the Prophet (AS) with his physical eyes everyday but he saw with the eyes of his heart once. Hz Uwais al-Qarani never saw the Prophet physically, not even once, but he saw his Prophet’s reality every single day.

Now, discover, learn to discover. May Allah make us to discover more and to increase our knowledge, insyaAllah. Al-Fatiha. SelamAleykum.
