Murid: As you were saying, when you turn 30 or 40, the heart should turn away. I was thinking, like how they have manufactured certain terms for this time, in the west especially they call it “midlife crisis”, so when the heart starts turning, instead of turning towards Ahiret, they kind of already have created a trap there of midlife crisis.
Midlife crisis is coming around because you start losing your taste in this world, and because you are losing taste in this world, you are getting older, you know that you are going to die, and then that’s how. I’m putting it very simply, anyway. And then what do you do with this? Some people they do this, this, this, just to make themselves more alive. So either you are going to double down your pursuit of this world, or you start thinking about the meaning of what you are doing. I’ve said this before, when you enter into Tarikat, at any age, that’s the time when you start having a midlife crisis, a life crisis, saying ‘what is this world? Why am I here? What is the meaning of this?’ And if you keep asking yourself that question, you will be in safety, because you will be around people who say ‘the meaning of life is, the reason why you have been created, it is to remember Allah. You have been created to worship Him.’ How are you going to worship Him? Be around your guide, who is going to guide you how to worship, with this, this, this.
This is not your home. You are feeling tired from this. You can never be tired from your home. This is not our home. Start looking. This is important for us. A belief is not something to be taken for granted, you have it and then you just leave it like that. No. As the Prophet (AS) says, your belief, your shahadat gets old, as clothes they get old and dirty and torn, so does your shahadat, your belief. You must always supplement it, you must always clean it, you must always make it to become stronger, because we are living in this world, asfala safileen, lowest of the low, but it is the purpose, this is an enemy, to remove that faith from you. So everyday, you are looking, ‘is my faith getting less or more?’ and you work according to that, to increase it, then you’re okay. But the thing is, no one is asking those questions. Not individuals, not families, not groups. This is something that is spiritual. So when you are not asking yourself these questions and taking care of it, slowly, without realizing it, your faith is getting chipped away. Then later, you still think you’re the best, but if you look at all the things that you are doing, it’s straying so far away from what the Prophet (AS) brought. You understand? Evet.
