How is the Murid supposed to prepare himself to handle the Sheykh’s decisions?

Question: Rasulullah (AS)’s decisions, the munafiqs were making fitnah and Rasulullah (AS) said ‘burn that house with them alive inside.’ And then some people said ‘it’s so harsh.’ If the Sheykh sometimes makes decisions like this, how is the Murid supposed to prepare himself, because he cannot handle the Sheykh’s decision?

Now, in this way, let’s speak about this way, be very specific. I’m not going to speak for all Sheykhs, all Tarikats, all times. In our way, like this, in the way of Sahibulsaif, he does not put the Murids in very difficult situations where they are going to do things and they don’t understand. Why are we reciting the last few ayats of Suratul Baqarah, Amana Rasul, Allah is saying, what? ‘We don’t give more, We don’t burden more than you can carry.’ Yes? And yet the dua is also saying ‘Ya Rabbi, don’t burden us more than we can carry.’ So both Allah is saying and Allah is teaching us how to say. Why? Because when things happens to us also, we think it’s coming from Allah, Allah is burdening us, but it’s not. We did it to ourselves. Allah testing is different, Prophet testing you, but when you put yourself into that situation, it’s not a test. You messed up, now you have to clean up. Mess up is different from test. So the Sheykh is not going to put you through any difficulty, especially you are there one, two, three years, ten years even, Sheykh Effendi said so many times, they don’t test you like that. We sit and we watch how things are moving, we pray, we want certain things to be like that, more naturally people are moving, we push a little bit here and there, if they move to it, they move to it. They move to the other side, they move to the other side.

How many people we see, with the Prophet (AS), with Sheykh Effendi, with us, that we are pushing to this side, and then they move themselves from our hand and they move to the other side. Do we force them? Was that a test? No. What kind of a test it is, when something is happening, we say ‘be careful, you are going to meet that accident, that accident is going to happen to you, I can see it’s happening,’ ‘yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,’ ‘be careful, it’s coming clearer,’ ‘no, no, no, it’s not going to happen to me.’ That is stubbornness. That is not a test, you are being stupid. Answers are given to you, ‘be careful, be careful, be careful,’ and then when it hits you, and then you say ‘why this is happening to me?’

So no, our way is not to put the Murids through tests like that too. And everyone should be spoken to and everything should be handled according to their own station. Do you understand? What is your responsibility is different from his, different from his, different from his. The words I’m going to use is different from you, different from you, different from you. There is a general words of the sohbet, general words of the Khutbah, and then there’s specific situations, specific words. This is when you have to apply. It’s always the difficultly in application, right? This is where you have to move your intelligence, move your heart, move your spirit to apply it properly. You cannot just say ‘he said that, I’m going to do like this.’ You cannot follow blindly. Islam is not for people who are blind and people who are stubborn and people who are just one dimensional. You have to be intelligent.

So now, burning people? Punishing people? You pick that example about the Holy Prophet (AS), that is completely different. Now, when it comes to a matter of life and death, which that situation was, it’s not just principle or points of view or opinions, it’s life and death. You understand? They did something and it will destroy the lives and the property of people, then you have a right to defend, and you have the right to punish. Now, when it’s not really destroying properties, it’s not really harming our lives, people who are here who betray, for example, or who try to do harm, they try to, there are people who tried to do it in different ways, through physically, through, yes, through black magic they are doing it so many times also, through this and that, but we fear Allah. We are asking Allah to protect, and we never open our hands and we curse them or burn them.

This is the way of Tarikat. What the Prophet was doing was Shariat. This is the way of Tarikat now. So even if people are going to do that, we see, okay, harming other people? We have to stand up and we have to defend. If necessary we have to punish. It’s only to me, it’s not causing anyone any harm, what’s causing harm to me, he’s just saying a couple of things,’ be patient. Be patient. We don’t turn our duas into a bad dua and try to burn the people. So many people they do it. They get upset, they do it. I know Murids who are so, they get annoyed by other Murids, they are just joking around with them, and he says ‘okay, if you make me more annoyed, I’m going to go to the Maqam and I’m going to ask Grandsheykh to curse you.’ And people are still thinking these are holy ones, these are very religious ones, very holy ones. How holy can you be when you are childish? How holy can you be when you are vindictive, when you are vengeful, when someone touches you a little bit and not only you want to touch back, you want to punch back. So you didn’t get rid of your ego. You can be next to the Sheykh, you can be going to the Hajj everyday, you can be making zikr, you can see visions, it doesn’t matter. You didn’t fix yourself. It doesn’t matter. You can see visions, you can see Prophet everyday. So what? You did not fix yourself. There were so many, there were unbelievers who saw the Prophet every day. Yes, there were munafiqs who say the Prophet everyday. But when you are not using that example, that situation to change yourself, then it’s lost, it’s not working. The whole point is to change to become better.

So it’s not a test. What kind of a test that we are in? Anybody tested with hunger? No. Poverty? No. You have no clothes, no roof over your head? You cannot pay your bills? No. If anything, things become even easier. When does it become difficult? When your ego doesn’t like it, when your ego says ‘I want to be free. I don’t want to make zikr everyday. I don’t want to listen to sohbets everyday,’ men and women. ‘I want to circle around everywhere.’ We say, you are coming here, what are you doing there? ‘No, I want to be free. What is this, a gangster? You are mafia?’ I said, breh, you forget you make an oath, you swore in front of Allah, Allah’s Hand is on you? You forget that part? We don’t, you ever hear me speaking like this? But they passed their limits. They say ‘oh, so it’s a mafia, you can never get away.’ I say, go away, who’s stopping you? But remember, you made a promise, you know? It’s not for nothing. You made a promise and you broke it. And we say Allah’s Hand is over it. That means nothing to you? Still, what are we doing? What are doing? Are we being busy with ourselves or talking, cursing? No. We have so many things to do. Good things to do , Alhamdulillah. Things for us to be busy with. And we are happy in this way.

So you can come, yes, this way, come, whoever you are, this is not a Dergah of despair, come, but Sheykh Effendi says ‘come, and leave your ego outside. Leave your stubbornness, leave all your bad characteristics, you cannot bring it inside. You cannot. You go to a movie theater, there is a Shariat that is there. You pay money to watch a stupid movie, there is a Shariat. You cannot do this, you cannot do that. And some people, they want to bring, smuggle food, they say ‘no, you have to buy over there.’ But over there is so expensive, they are saying, next to the movie theater. But I’m saying there is a Shariat. There is a law. Nobody can pretend there is no law. So you think there is no law here? Just because you say love, there is no law? Where the hell do you come from? Love there is no law? You love your baby, there is a law. You have to take care of the baby. Yes? You love your wife, your husband, your children, anything, you have to take care of it. It comes together.

So then you say you love, but that one is doing things to harm themselves, not listening, doing this and that. You must have, you must stand up for what is right. You must stand up for what is right. And Allah is saying, even if it’s against who your beloved ones, your family members, your father, your mother, you need to stand up for that. So more time you spend in sohbet, more you are trying to understand the sohbet, your Sheykh, you are trying to understand him and you are molding yourself to him, and you are taking, you are applying, you are understanding, those kinds of things will not happen. And when there is a difficulty, when there is a test, let’s say, you know what to do. You are not going to get burned. There is no fire there. There is going to be Nur. And they will watch it. There’s going to be Nur.

Where is there going to be fire? When you take it from your ego. You take it from your ego, ego is always fire. But when you take from that one who is giving you the light, there is always light, there is always Nur. You understand? Wa minallahu taufiq, Al Fatiha. Amin. Selam Aleykum.

To be busy with the Sheykh more, then more you are, it’s a school, you know? You must be challenged. It’s not just a nice time. You must be challenged. ‘Oh, I’m thinking like this, but my Sheykh is saying this is wrong. I’m thinking like this, but my Sheykh is saying this is wrong. He is saying this is wrong in private, it’s okay. He’s saying I’m wrong in public, I get so embarrassed, I get shy and shame.’ So now, this is your fight. This is your struggle. Now this is how you are going to become more sincere with that. And if it is just agree, agree, agree, then you are not tested. When you are not tested, when the time comes, the real thing, you will fail. Do you understand? It’s okay. Make mistakes, learn from it. Don’t make mistakes and get so destroyed, as if we are all so pure and we make one mistake and subhanAllah, we are so bothered by it. Ohh, we are filled with mistakes. We used to make mistakes upon mistakes and we don’t feel nothing about it. Yes. And then why this? Oh, because it’s the ego.

Now the Sheykh is poking you a little bit like this, like this, like this. If he sees you are getting too pumped up like this, he may let it to come down. When he sees you are too sad, he may tickle you to make you laugh. When he sees that you are laughing too much, he will poke you, because now everything has to be in balance. But you are seeing where you are it from the ego. Now it has to be fixed. You cannot say ‘this is my personality. This is my character.’ Then what the heck are you doing here? The only one who can say ‘this is my character’ is when he’s following the sunnat 100 percent, because it is not a character anymore, it is the character of the Prophet (AS). We are coming here to change. Imagine you are going to school, you go and you study algebra, and then you don’t understand, you don’t want to understand, you don’t want to study, you fail the exam, teacher says you fail the exam, you say ‘no, this is my character. It’s not a failure, that’s what you think. I’d like to have a second opinion.’ This is what’s happening in Tarikat. People are being stupid. They know this from life, but when they come here they become stupid. We should not be.
